While minimum wage hikes have been blocked at the federal and state levels, the RaiseUpNY campaign proposes giving localities the power to raise their own minimum wages in order to immediately boost paychecks. If local governments have this authority, it could put upward pressure on the statewide minimum wage over time, as seen in examples from California, Maryland and other states that have taken this approach. Three New York state bills have been proposed this year that would raise wages either directly or by enabling local wage laws.

The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
