Rachel Carson was a creative, intelligent and determined writer who loved animals and the environment. She felt proud of raising awareness about environmental issues but uncomfortable with her celebrity status. Carson feared pollution and pesticides and wanted to open people's eyes to preserving the earth's resources. She won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work.
