Rabies
Rabies is an infectious viral disease usually
transmitted by a bite from a infected animal.
If a bite from a rabid animal goes untreated and
rabies develops, it is almost always fatal. It is spread
to people through bites or scratches, usually via
saliva. It can affect both domestic and wild animals.
I. Furious Rabies
Infected people who develop furious rabies will be
hyperactive and excitable and may display erratic
behavior.
Other symptoms may be
 Insomnia
 Anxiety
 Confusion
 Agitation
 Excess salivation
 Hydrophobia (Fear of water)
 Aerophobia ( fear of fresh air)
 Hallucinations
ii. Paralytic Rabies
This form of rabies takes longer to set in,
but the effects are just as severe. Infected
people slowly become paralyzed, will
eventually slip into a coma, and die.
According toWHO, 30 percent of rabies cases
are paralytic.
How do people
carry Rabies?
i. Animals with rabies transfer the
virus to other animals and to people
via saliva following a bite or via a
scratch.
ii. Once a person has been bitten, the
virus spreads through their nerves to
the brain.
iii. Once in the virus, the virus multiplies
rapidly.
iv. This activity causes severe
inflammation of the brain and spinal
cord after the person deteriorates
rapidly and dies
Transmission
• From animals to animals
• From animals to
humans
• From humans to
Humans is very rare.
Way of transmission
* Bite from rabid &
unvaccinated animals
* By open wounds
* Any contact with the
mucous membrane

NOTES
 Dog is most common culprit
 It usually take 4-12 weeks for a person to
develop rabies symptoms.( Depends on
location of virus entry and viral load.
 40% of rabies suspect are children under
age 15.
 If you are bitten on the neck, seek help as
soon as possible.
HOWTO CURE?
 Washing infected area for
at least 15 minutes with
soap and water, detergents
or iodine.
 Series of injection
 Rabies vaccine, a series of
five shots over 14 days.
 Rabies immunoglobin &
series of injections.This
protocol is known as “ Post-
exposure prophylaxis”
