OLTP systems process transactional data in real-time for operational needs, while OLAP systems analyze historical transactional data to identify trends to help with strategic decision making. Two-tier client-server models have clients connecting directly to the database server, while three-tier models separate the presentation, application processing, and data storage into independent tiers for improved scalability and flexibility. ERP systems often require additional bolt-on software modules to address needs not covered by the core ERP system, such as customer relationship management.
