Quality vs Quantity
By larry hernandez
Predictions
In this presentation im going to talk about quality vs quantity and how quality is
better in the fashion industries. There are many reason why we should support
businesses that take care of their garments and make quality garments.
The bad side of quantity
Many store nowadays are leaning over the cheap clothes that can rip or get damaged
in 3 months. Stores such as HM, SHIEN, and AEROPOSTALE.
These stores has been known for their cheap clothing and the big amount of clothes
they sell in there store. They also have been in controversy for sweatshops.
SHIEN is famous for having over 5,000 items in their website to sell. As a clothing
store no brand that takes care of the quality doesn't sell that many garments as its
more expensive to make over 5,000 items with quality fabric. They surpassed “H&M
and ZARA as the united states top selling fast fashion” (peiyue,2021).
How fast fashion companies sell large quantity for cheap
A lot of these fast fashion companies such as shien are notorious for having
sweatshops in low-income countries such as pakistan, china and thailand.
Sweatshops are crowded workplace with very poor illegal working condition. This
includes little to know breaks, inadequate work space, or uncomfortably high
temperatures work place for little pay.
This is illegal and it violates basic human rights. Workers should not be treated like
this knowing the company makes over 15 billion dollars a year.
Examples of sweatshops
Importance ideas of this animal behavior
It is okay to sell cheap clothes as it's not something all people can buy due to there
financial life. As a cheap t-shirt could cost up to $7-$10 to produce and they could
sell for $15-$20 for the people that are buying these clothes. But having sweatshops
to make a lot of these shirts is unacceptable behaviors since these companies won't
make a lot of money with a sell. So they make large quantities to make profit having
to use sweatshops.
Step by step solutions
There are many ways we can stop this behavior, such as
articles being posted about these bad conditions or even
making a case on it. These companies make so much money
that they won't care if they are article about them as they
can easily pay to take down the post or win cases as they
have so much money.
A great solution i believe could make a change is informing
your peers around you about these bad work condition and
explaining to them why they shouldn't support these
companies. Just telling people to stop will get you ignored
but having a reason and telling your peers could make the
difference in stopping these companies by abusing its power
Benefits of supporting a company that takes care of
their quality
Having good quality garments doesn't mean having to spend $100 dollars on a
t-shirts. As many good quality clothes cost around the range of $30-$50 dollars.
Buying good quality clothes are known to last you more than 3 years as its made of
good quality. So spending a little more money on a t-shirt could save you more
money on the long run as you have to buy clothes every 3-6 months as they are
easily rippable.
My experience
When i was a freshman i would go to HM and buy 5 shirts every
3-6 months because they would create holes, shrink, or even rip.
This is just not how garments are supposed to do. As i got older i
got more knowledge about clothes and started to think about
getting better quality to last me more the 3-6 months.
Every year i would have to buy a new backpack as it would create
holes and tear by the straps. I invested in a louis vuitton
backpack in 2016 and i would use that bag for school and
traveling. As of today i never got a tear, hole or even a stitching
getting out of place as its made of really good material and it
projected to last up to 10 years. this Has been a really good
investment as i would spend $80-$100 on a backpack every year.
Obstacles
As for getting the company to change it quantity over quality status could be difficult
as they are so greedy they don't care about their reputation. Unless it sells, it's
good for them. If they get the profits from the 4 shirts they sell they don't care.
This is the biggest obstacle is these companies just simply not caring about their
reputation.
But this cannot stop our attempt to inform our peers about these companies to
stop supporting these companies and look into supporting small businesses
instead that take more care of their garments then these big companies
