What is the general rule to find the number of sticks
for each letter?
Since the number of sticks is 3 times the
number of Zs. Therefore the general rule
to find the number of sticks is 3 x n.
Since the number of sticks is 5 times the
number of Es. Therefore the general rule
to find the number of sticks is 5 x n.

How can we identify the rule of a pattern?
• In a pattern, each term changes from one
to the next in a fixed way or according to
a fixed rule.
• We look at how each term is different
from the previous term.

How are variables important in writing the
pattern rules?
• This helps us deduce the rule.
• We use a variable to write the rule, since
a pattern can have any number of terms.
• So, if we use the variable n for any term,
we can find the quantity for the nth term
in the pattern by using the rule.
• Each rule, a variable is n is a letter that
represents an unknown quantity.

Suppose Eya makes a necklace using 8 beads, how
many beads will she need to make 10 necklace? How
can we write its general rule
1 necklace 2 necklace
8 x n or 8n, where n is the number of necklace to
be made.
8n = 8 (10)
= 80
