Weaving is the primary form of arts and crafts in Panay
Islands.
• In Iloilo, weaving patadyong is an important industry.
Patadyong is a wrap-around piece of cloth worn by
women. This type of clothing is often colorful and features
linear and geometric designs.
• Cloth weaving in Aklan requires long hours of laborious
and painful extraction of fibers from pineapple leaves. The
Pinya weaving become almost saintly because of its
delicate and sharp fibers that often cause multiple cuts to
hands.
NEGROS
Negros is an island of so many festivals. One of the most
famous is the Masskara festival in Bacolod.
• Weaving is an integral part of the lives of the Negrenses. In
Valencia, Negros Oriental, sinamay weaving is a world-
class industry.
“Sinamay” is made from abaca twine and indigenous plant
similar to banana. The natural fiber is dyed, woven and
stiffened for the production of hats.
CEBU
Cebu city is the oldest city in the country and dubbed as
Milan of Asia because of the furniture industry.
• Veto Selma made from rattan is highly-stylized furniture
and fixtures of the island.
• Aside from it Cebu was known also for fashion jewelries
made of woods, stones and metals, etc.
• Guitars from Cebu are also popular in many parts of the
country because of its unique blend of sound,
craftsmanship and durability.
SAMAR, LEYTE and BILIRAN
Samar and Leyte are two large islands in the Visayas.
• Basey Samar is known for its beautiful and colorful hand
woven banig that are made from tikog leaves. Tikog is a
waray term for bariw or romblon.
• Pu-so is a specialty of the people in Samar and Leyte. Pu-
so is made from glutinous wrapped in a carefully woven
young coconut leaves (or talbos). This weaving practice is
also similar to patupat, a delicacy in Pampanga.
BOHOL and SIQUIJOR
Bohol is know for its beautiful sceneries, exotic foods, rare
animals, old churches and basketry.
• Basketry is among the earliest industry in bohol where
most of the weavers are women.
• The municipality of Tubigon is known to be the loom
weaving center of the province.
• Siquijor is a small island province know for its famous
beaches and diving spots.
