There is an app for that a review of smartphone apps for marketing researchMerlien Institute
This document reviews smartphone apps for marketing research. It finds that while there are many apps available, reviews of them are limited and taxonomies of app types are lacking. The document then categorizes and lists numerous apps for surveys, qualitative research, mystery shopping, customer experience, communities, and utilities, providing information on their target users, functions, access, and costs. It aims to help researchers navigate the growing landscape of mobile research apps.
This document provides 25 things to know about the American South. It discusses distinct Southern dialects and cultures, common Southern phrases like "y'all" and "big ole", Southern foods like grits and crawdads, the prevalence of Waffle Houses and Delta Airlines in the South, and how politeness in the South isn't always sincere. It also notes the diversity of Southern music beyond just country and that many major brands originated in the South.
The document discusses the use of mobile devices for qualitative research. It notes that mobile is the preferred personal media and allows researchers to understand people in their natural environments through real-time data collection. Some challenges include screen size, user experience, and privacy/ethical concerns regarding photos and videos. However, mobile research provides new opportunities to bring qualitative insights to life for clients in a transparent way through tools like audio diaries, surveys, and online discussion boards. The future of mobile qualitative research may involve more dispersed workforces, integration with social media, and a focus on making sense of rich video/photo data through qualitative analytics.
- Mystery shopping is used to anonymously evaluate customer service, operations, employee integrity, merchandising, and product quality through trained shoppers. It benefits businesses by improving customer retention, reinforcing positive behaviors, and identifying training needs.
- A mystery shopping program involves setting objectives, designing questionnaires, recruiting and training shoppers, collecting data reports, analyzing findings, and repeating the process to monitor performance over time. It provides quantitative and qualitative feedback to enhance the customer experience.
- While related to marketing research, mystery shopping has a more operational focus on training and incentives rather than determining customer opinions. It should not replace formal customer satisfaction research but can complement it.
The Michelson interferometer works by emitting a beam of light from a source, splitting it using a beam splitter into two beams that travel to different mirrors and are reflected back. When the paths of the two beams are the same length, constructive interference occurs and a bright light is detected. However, when one mirror is moved by a quarter wavelength, a phase difference is introduced that causes complete destructive interference and no light is detected. The Michelson interferometer thus demonstrates interference by introducing path length differences between split beams.
A visual explanation of the Michelson Interferometertarotart
The Michelson interferometer uses a laser beam that is split by a partially-silvered mirror (beam splitter) into two beams that travel different paths and are reflected by mirrors. When the beams recombine at the detector, their interference creates bright or dark bands depending on the difference between their path lengths (path difference). Initially with equal path lengths, the center is bright, but as one mirror moves further, increasing the path difference by half wavelengths, the center alternates between dark and bright as the path difference causes first destructive then constructive interference.

Mark Michelson from the MMRA discusses the use of mobile qualitative research methods to understand people. He explains that mobile research allows researchers to collect real-time behavioral, observational, and sentiment data from participants in their natural environments. It also provides richer contextual data through videos, photos, and location information. While early mobile research used PDAs and texting, smartphones have increased the potential of mobile methods by allowing apps to automate data collection. Mobile research provides both opportunities for new insights but also challenges regarding privacy, validity of self-reported data, and complex regulations.
Mobile research requires new standards of ethics and privacy to address unique aspects of the channel. The MMRA is working to develop guidelines addressing issues like GPS tracking, video/photo permissions, and data ownership. ESOMAR has also provided some standards, adopting many existing online guidelines and addressing mobile survey concerns. Key aspects to regulate include obtaining continuous consent, only collecting relevant data, managing privacy of location data and images, and respecting an individual's "right to be forgotten".

Presentation on using mobile for mystery shopping presented by Mark Michelson at the Mystery Shopping Provider's Association European Conference in Sardinia, May 2
The document discusses the use of mobile devices for market research (Mobile MR). It explains that Mobile MR allows researchers to understand people in real-time by collecting data on behavior, sentiments, and experiences using smartphones. Mobile MR provides both qualitative and quantitative data. Some benefits include increased reach, lower costs, and generating more engaging research. Challenges include privacy concerns and ensuring high data quality. The future of Mobile MR is predicted to include more co-creation with consumers and integrating all consumer data into a single online portal.
