Pune Municipal Corporation plans to establish the first-ever groundwater management cell in response to increasing water demand. Activists have urged the mayor to prioritize groundwater augmentation, which he agreed to do, while also discussing measures like suspending road concreting to allow rainwater absorption. The initiative aims to enhance citizen participation in groundwater management and could set a precedent for other cities in the smart city mission.

Groundwater is an integral part of the environment and the major source of drinking water.
On the account of, increased demand of water consumption, Pune Municipal Corporation is
planning to boost groundwater with active participation of citizen.
The activists appealed to the mayor to prioritize groundwater augmentation and mayor agreed
on it. In the meeting of activists and mayor, Activists also proposed for suspending concreting of
roads because it is not allowing the rainwater to absorb and percolate but the matter remained
inconclusive. Topics like Maps of the areas, water bodies, recharging of bore wells by
channeling rainwater underground and groundwater levels were also discussed in this meeting.
Activists expressed hope of some meaningful actions form PMC and also happy as the civic
body establishing the first-ever groundwater management cell that will be followed by all cities
in the Smart City Mission across the country.
