Puna is a district on the island of Hawaii located between the boundaries of Okiokioaho and Māwae. It has an area of 499.5 square miles without any permanently flowing streams. Some unique plants and animals are endemic to the area, such as the Amakihi and Apapane birds. The district experiences trade winds called Hali'ala Pu'ulena and rains named Moaniani lehua. Several proverbs reference the landscape of Puna, including its blackened land from lava flows, fragrant hala trees, and relationship with the neighboring district of Ka'u.
