Pulp Fiction is a 1994 crime thriller directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film uses a nonlinear storyline and intertwines the stories of Los Angeles criminals. It opens with a tense conversation between two criminals at a diner that turns into them robbing the restaurant. The film attracted thrill-seeking audiences and was praised for its unique structure and characters. It was influential in redefining the crime genre in film.

4. Audience With the genre of a crime thriller and with relation with the other genre of films which Quentin Tarantino has done, he has atrracted a specific type of audience. Pulp fiction was one of the first film to create a mulitply story based from the point of view from the characters. 6. Technology Technology has dramatically changed since the release of the film. DVD was introduced the year after so sales would of slowly progressed but since the demand has increased. Introduction of the internet and online viewing and own demand has added to figures but the majority of sales were in the pre broadband era.

7. Opening to Film and effect on audience. The start to the film is a black background with white writing (as the same as lock stock), the definition of PULP is shown on screen, giving us a understanding to the name of the film, leaving the audience thinking what is the reasoning be the chosen title? A fade to black and the opening sequence, two people a man and a woman sitting dinner in which appears to be a dinner, empty plates with a table between them. Red leather chairs with blinds half drawn behind them. This lets us believe that the setting is in America. The male then lights up a cigarette an he opening line is ‘For get it, its too risky.’ the viewer is left asking what is to risky? This opening line sets the tone of the film the males body posture is very hunched over but his foot is on his chair therefore creating a opening but very hard to approach position. Whilst the female is in leg together and hands placed on the table. As the continue their conversation a waitress comes over and asks if anybody wanted any more coffee, they respond very politely with open smiles, but the males next line is ‘is the same risk you would take if you were to rob a bank’

8. This makes the viewer very tense and anticipating what’s happening next, plain clothed people, male wearing a Hawaiian shirt with the lady wearing a purple sweater. The camera angles changes between a long shot of bother characters talking, to a conversational camera work, alternate shots of mid shots and over the shoulder shots between characters giving the audience more interaction with the film. This conversation continues with the different types of shots but just alternating between. The dialogue in the conversation is very calm considering the topic, they start talking about robberies that have committed and the best way to do so. Then the idea of robbing the restaurant appears to be a good idea. After deciding the diner is a good place to rob, calmly the both reach for their guns and a personality change in turn to control the situation. The cleaver camera shot allows us to relate to the characters but also think that criminals are sometime nothing more than us to the eye.

9. Mise en scène A woman lying on the floor instant thought is dead but possible unconscious. Blood on the nose and chin, fight or accident was had has happened previously in the film? Who is she ? Syringe being used what does it have in it? Is it going to be used on the woman, why are they using it ? Syringe packet, must of come from there or is there more than one leaves the audience in suspense, also asking is there any other medical equipment going to be used. More than one character in the scene, and a point of view of the woman. Very clever camera angle. Makes the audience more involved with the film. Syringes associated with doctors in medical profession of drug pleasure. Is this person help of killing?

10. Another point of view shot (poor quality) the character is carrying a sword, swords are a thing of pride and carry danger with them used in defence or attack so a situation is going to occur. This scene a sex scene a man in a blue shirt and African American person having intercourse, but what is very strange about this scene is another man is watching them. This makes the audience think is this a group act of all male? Or is it a woman? Poor lighting conditions, suggest its in a separate area or desolate scene, grotty so quite dirty place to engage in sexual activity. Spur of the moment. This room is quite plain looking due to lighting but there’s very little objects in the room.

11. Representation In this film people are seen in many different ways. As this film was one of the first multi point of view stories, the appearance of the character's changed of the period of time. An African American man is seen being raped but this is kept in tone with the film but this is no stereotypical view but representation that this event does happen. A partnership between a white and black man, a friendship and possible more? But a typical men in black suits. ‘ American’s carry guns’ many of the people in the film had the possession of a gun, a very stereotypical view but the law is in favour of legal possession of a gun. But these views of the ‘typical’ topics add effect to the film and makes us the audience feel in the film more involved.
