PTSD in Females
Women, Trauma, and PTSD
Injury is not unusual in girls; five out of ten women experience a traumatic event. Women tend to
see different injuries than men. While both what is anxiety men and women report the exact same
symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (hyperarousal, re experiencing, avoidance, and
numbing), some symptoms are far more common for girls or men.
History
Many early information on post-traumatic stress disorder and injury originated from studies of men
Veterans, mainly Vietnam Veterans. Investigators found that females reactions were not dissimilar to
man fight Experts and began to analyze the consequences of sexual assault. Post-traumatic stress
disorder can be also caused by women's experiences of trauma.
Sexual assault is less unlikely to trigger post-traumatic stress disorder than a great many additional
occasions.
Women may be more likely to blame themselves for trauma experiences than guys.
Risk of encountering injury
Results from a nationwide mental health study that is sizable reveal that a bit more than half of all
women will encounter at least one traumatic event in their own life. Girls are somewhat less likely to
see trauma than men. The most frequent trauma for girls is sexual assault or child sexual abuse.
About one in three women will experience a sexual assault within their lifetime. Rates of sexual
assault are higher for girls than guys. Women are also more inclined to possess a loved one suddenly
expire or abused in youth, to encounter domestic violence, or to be neglected.
What happens after trauma
Women are much more likely to see sexual attack.
After a trauma, some women begin drinking or using drugs might feel depressed, or produce post-
traumatic stress disorder. Women tend to be a lot more than twice as likely to develop PTSD than
men (10% for women and 4% for men). There really are a number of reasons men may get not get
more that are PTSD than women:
Why are some girls at higher risk for PTSD?
Maybe not all-women who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD. Girls are somewhat more
than likely to develop PTSD if they:
Have a previous mental health problem (for instance depression or stress)
Experienced an extremely serious or life-threatening trauma
Were sexually assaulted
Were injured throughout the occasion
Had a severe reaction at that time of the occasion
Experienced events that were stressful that were other afterward
Don't have good support that is social
What post-traumatic stress disorder is like for women
Some symptoms tend to be more prevalent in women than guys. Girls are somewhat more likely to
be jumpy, to have more trouble feeling emotions, and to prevent things that remind them of the
trauma than men. Men are somewhat more than likely to have trouble controlling their anger then
girls and to feel angry. Girls with PTSD are more likely while guys with PTSD are far more likely to
possess problems with drugs or alcohol to feel anxious and depressed. Men and women who
experience PTSD may develop physical health issues.

Therapy for PTSD
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001923/
There are excellent treatments for PTSD. Nevertheless, not everyone who experiences a trauma
attempts therapy. At least one Complex Trauma study discovered that women respond to therapy as
good as or better than guys. This may be because women are generally more comfortable talking
with others than men about personal things and sharing feelings.
Girls in the military
Women in the military are at high risk for exposure to traumatic events, especially during times of
war. Presently, about 15% of military personnel in Iraq are women. An increasing number of women
are now post traumatic stress disorder being exposed to combat even though men are more than
likely to have combat. Girls in the armed services are at greater danger of exposure to sexual-
harassment or sexual assault than guys. Future studies are expected to better comprehend the
ramifications of women's contact with sexual assault and both battle.
