This seminar was presented by me on 2008, Although the rating point changes on the past years, still the body contains many rich information and case studies related to green buildings and sustainable design.
Seminar Presented by me on 2008 which I performed again on 2013.
I Thought it worth reading, although the rating system did have some changes during the past years, but still the presentation gives an overall environmental and energy strategies, also it provides a case studies along with examples of projects worldwide.
I thought it would be a good start for a professionals whose interested in green and sustainable design.
Green construction or sustainable building refers to both a structure and the application of processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from planning to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.
Green building, or sustainable design, is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use energy, water, and materials, and of reducing impacts on human health and the environment for the entire lifecycle of a building. Green-building concepts extend beyond the walls of buildings and include site planning, community and land-use planning issues as well.
The growth and development of our communities have a large impact on our natural environment. The manufacturing, design, construction, and operation of the buildings in which we live and work are responsible for the consumption of many of our natural resources.

2. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The following Performance Reports were created in accordance with Council Resolution 20071129-045. The
City of Austin is a recognized international leader in sustainable building practices in which municipal building
strive to conserve energy, water, and other natural resources while promoting human health and safety. The
holistic approach to architecture creates high-quality and enduring structures that enhance the economic
value and reduce the lifecycle costs of a building.
Design and construction of buildings are driven by the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC)
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines and promote these goals. The following
reports provide information about municipal buildings, highlight LEED credentials, and promote sustainable
building achievements.

The Public Safety Training Academy was constructed in 2011 and it has been serving as the training school for
Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, and Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services. This
project is an interior renovation to approximately 6,607sf of Building I. The portion of the building to be
renovated consists of the existing building’s open office space to provide functional private offices and meeting
rooms for APD’s Police Technology Unit. Additionally, the work included a full renovation of the break Room,
classrooms, restrooms and locker rooms used by the APD cadet training academy.
Occupant comfort and energy improvements included a new zoned HVAC system and thermal insulation applied
at the roof level (previously uninsulated). Low-VOC finish materials and denim sound batts help indoor air quality
and acoustics in the offices. Upgrades were also made to the life safety system, and the interior of the building
was brought into TAS 2012 accessibility compliance. Site improvements included accessible sidewalks and
replacement of the building’s deteriorated wastewater line.
The project is performing outstandingly in energy saving and water use reduction. It has achieved a 49 percent of
lighting power reduction by implementing occupancy sensors and adapting LED lighting, along with a 40 percent
of indoor water use reduction by applying efficient water fixtures. The project has established a Green Cleaning
Policy to purchase cleaning products and equipment that meet sustainable standards and reduce contaminants
to occupants.

Potable water is a valuable resource that can be
significantly reduced in the design phase of a building
Reducing portable water also reduces energy
used to treat water supply and in domestic water
heating.
Reducing water consumption saves energy
because less water needs to be treated and
pumped to end users
High-efficiency water fixtures allow more water flow
with less energy use and provides a sustainable
alternative to conventional systems
