- I worked as an assistant for a media technician in my secondary school for a week. This included planning lessons for his classes. For a lesson we had the students take a photo of a stone gargoyle and used photoshop to turn it into a cartoon. I also helped design a wall mural of Sheffield to be displayed in the school.
- First off I’d like to talk about a careers programme I signed up for at my college, Career Ready. Although this isn’t technically work experience, it helped me develop the skills associated with a working environment. This involved attending master classes which were utilised to improve these skills. I was also assigned a careers mentor, who I met regularly who helped me develop my CV at the time and improved my interviewing skills with mock interviews. I also took part in charity fundraising event where I helped run a stall in my college. I ran a Guess how many sweets are in the jar stall. Career Ready helped prepare me for my 4 week work placement.
- Which leads me into my first real work experience at the St. Luke’s Crookes shop. St. Luke’s is a charity that specialises in palliative care for patients with terminal illnesses so it was an honour to help raise money for the charity.
- During my time at Crookes, I mainly worked in the Amazon and eBay department. This mainly included listing donated items such as DVDs, CDs and books on Amazon and eBay to make money for St. Luke’s. This involved a lot of product research and helped me match the best prices of the product so it would be more likely to be sold on. I would also be handed order invoices every morning and would find the items in the storage room to package and label with a franking machine. I would then leave these in a Royal Mail, mail bag to be dispatched at the end of the day.
- During my time at the Crookes shop I was able to build upon my communication and teamwork skills to problem solve. For example, if I was unable to find a book in the storage room I would pass the invoice to a volunteer working in the department who could find it for me so I could use my time more productively. This placement also helped me improve my time management. I was also taught health and safety to make the workplace safer for myself and everyone there. Cleaning up the floor and learning how to lift heavy boxes correctly to prevent injury.
