Explanation-awareness in Case-Based Reasoning system development aims at making such systems smarter in interactions with their users. When using Linked Data for case acquisition from text one aspect of being smarter is the provision of evidence for the trustworthiness of the acquired cases. The Trustworthiness of such cases relies not only on the provenance of the text but also on the provenance of the used ontological knowledge. Users can only assess the quality of the case-based reasoner’s results, i.e., the cases, if the system provides provenance information and if such a system can justify its results. In fact, explanation capabilities very much rely on provenance information.
Case acquisition from text: Ontology-based information extraction with SCOOBI...Thomas Roth-Berghofer
myCBR is a freely available tool for rapid prototyping of similarity-based retrieval applications such as case-based product recommender systems. It provides easy-to-use model generation, data import, similarity modelling, explanation, and testing functionality together with comfortable graphical user interfaces. SCOOBIE is an ontology-based information extraction system, which uses symbolic background knowledge for extracting information from text. Extraction results depend on existing knowledge fragments. In this paper we show how to use SCOOBIE for generating cases from texts. More concrete we use ontologies of the Web of Data, published as so called Linked Data interlinked with myCBR’s case model. We present a way of formalising a case model as Linked Data ready ontology and connect it with other ontologies of the Web of Data in order to get richer cases.
Linked Data - the Future for Open Repositories. Kultivate WorkshopAdrian Stevenson
This document summarizes a presentation about exposing archival and library data as linked open data. It discusses two projects - LOCAH and Linking Lives - that transformed data from Archives Hub and Copac into RDF and exposed it as linked data. The projects modeled the data, transformed it to RDF, loaded it into a triplestore, and created linked data views. Challenges discussed include data modeling complexity, linking subjects and places, scalability, provenance, licensing, and sustainability. Linked data is presented as enabling easier data integration and discovery of hidden collections.
Presented at Travelocity.com's Customer Experience University: Microformats are a way to add human-readable data to your markup using simple XHTML. Set your content free! We'll walk through addiing XFN, hCard, hCalendar, hAtom, and other Microformats.
The document discusses the adoption of RDFa and structured data, also known as the "Wave", by major websites like Yahoo, Google, and Facebook between 2008-2010. It provides timelines showing when each site began supporting different types of structured data through RDFa, such as reviews, events, recipes, and products. The growing use of RDFa led to increases in backlinks and click-through rates, demonstrating the importance of structured data for search engine optimization.

Reduxexp: An Open-source Justification-based Explanation Support ServerThomas Roth-Berghofer
Trust in any decision depends on many factors. One way of improving trust is by explaining why a certain decision has been made and how certain actions in the context of a decision have been performed. In order to provide such explanations information systems need a mechanism for recording decisions and actions. The open-source server Reduxexp is such a system. This paper describes the architecture of Reduxexp and first experiences with the system.
Project management involves coordinating activities to achieve defined objectives within constraints of time, cost and scope. The key characteristics of a project are: 1) a defined objective, 2) a defined cost, 3) a defined schedule with start and end dates, 4) defined resources, and 5) good customer relations. Project managers must plan work and then work the plan to complete projects using available resources as scheduled and within budget.

Artificial Intelligence – Case-based reasoning for recommender systems – Invi...Thomas Roth-Berghofer
Artificial Intelligence is mimicking cognitive abilities. Experience guides us in our learning efforts and is one of the most important assets for problem solving. Experience is everywhere. For example, a recording technician needs experience in the studio to produce a recording worth listening to. Does the recording sound full and rich or still too tinny? Does the bass section sound overwhelming? Experience — my own or someone else’s — can help me solve a current problem, for example, in the recording studio. Case-based reasoning, a methodology in which experience is expressed in the form cases, allows transferring and applying expert knowledge where needed.
The world wide web has become the biggest source of information for many of us. We use a variety of search engines to find such diverse information as disease symptoms and medication, cooking recipes, movie tips, and scientific articles; with various degrees of success. To help us further, innovation has brought new 'answer engines' such as Wolfram Alpha which aims are 'bringing broad, deep, expert level knowledge to everyone'.
The Web is changing and turning into something more than being just a lot of web pages accessible to only humans.
The Smart University is the vision of the university as a platform that acquires and delivers foundational data to drive the analysis and improvement of the teaching & learning environment. Sensor-data, linked (open) data, and formalised teaching knowledge are the three sources that we are tapping. In this talk I presented first results of our efforts.
Low-cost motion detection and other sensors coupled with low-cost credit-card sized computers such as the Raspberry Pi open up opportunities to equip rooms with sensors. As the Raspberry Pi is a full-fledged computing device not only can one acquire data, but also process it in context.
Case-based reasoning is a problem-solving approach that allows to capture and re-use experience. With our toolset around the myCBR Workbench we started formalising teaching experience in Applied Sound Engineering and gold ore pretreatment knowledge to support students in their individual learning situations.

Presentation on Linked Data, Attention Data, and the use of library circulation data in the wider world. Presentation given at the wrap-up workshop for the JISC-funded MOSAIC Project.
The document discusses the evolution of the web from a "Web of Documents" to a "Semantic Web." It argues that while the vision of a Semantic Web proposed in 2001 has yet to be fully realized, the pieces are falling into place. Examples of linked open data projects show how structured data from sources like Wikipedia, the BBC, and government data is being interconnected using semantic web technologies. The use of semantics on the web brings value by sometimes solving narrow problems and linking data beyond specific applications.
