This document discusses research on plantar pressures in habitually unshod (barefoot) populations compared to shod populations. It finds that unshod feet tend to be wider with toes splayed out more and lower arches. This allows pressure to be distributed over a larger foot surface area. Studies also show differences in plantar pressures between young and old individuals. The author proposes a study to measure plantar pressures in unshod individuals in Madagascar and compare them to shod young athletes, to better understand how foot function changes with age and shoe use.
