school report against AUSVELS
for grade six. Disciplines for
history, Geography, Economics,
and include a comment about
your own knowledge of the cross
curriculum priority areas.
3. History
Australian History was the prime focus SOSE this semester. Alexandra
demonstrated a good grasp on understanding the topic ‘Australia as a
nation after 1900’ and is confident in stating some events through a
timeline. Alexandra enjoyed learning federation and democracy and
citizenship such as Australian Indigenous experiences through group
work and takes an active role in group discussion. Alexandra was
intrigued with the Aboriginal guest speaker and demonstrated some
understanding on the historical inquiry activities presented in the unit.
Alexandra had some difficulty exploring the topic ‘Australia’s British
Heritage’ which was assisted through videos and hand on activities.
She developed an understanding of the way of life of people who
migrated to Australia. Alexandra gained a great understanding of
migration history in Australia through developing narratives based on
information identified from a range of sources from the excursion to
the immigration museum.
4. Geography
Alexandra’s independent project on natural processes (earthquakes)
demonstrated that she had some understanding of the cause and effect it
has on the environment and humans. She produced a safety procedure
poster that provides in detail how to prepare and management of a
natural disasters. If Alexandra payed more attention while the class was
watching BTN (behind the news, news tv show for children), she would’ve
had a greater understanding of natural disasters through seeing real and
current examples of natural disasters across the world.
Alexandra can clearly identify the ways humans affect the Australian
environment and understands ways we can protect the environment.
Alexandra struggled on how to keep the environment sustainable, but
always asked questions. She found reading maps manageable when the
class worked with atlases and street directories and was able to describe
distance, direction and location of places. Alexandra is gaining an
understanding on mapping and the use of scales, north point and legend,
and is currently researching and collating data to form conclusions about
the resources at Tower Hill.
5. Economics
This area of Humanities is where Alexandra struggled. There was
confusion when learning about scarcity, but established a basic
understanding of the issue. Alexandra was very interested in the
processes of consumption, production and distribution in
meeting needs and wants, and the role of consumers, workers
and producers in the economy – when relating it to real world
examples. Alexandra is beginning to grasp the importance of
personal money management in terms of banking, budgeting
and saving. She showed engagement with economic issues,
through various activities and games. She was introduced
vocabulary such as consumption, production and enterprise and
responded very well at challenges set out to her.
