Purim is celebrated on the 14th of Adar to commemorate the defeat of Haman's plot to exterminate the Jews as recounted in the Book of Esther. On Purim, the Book of Esther is read from a silver fish and pastries shaped like Haman's three-pointed hat called Hamentaschen are eaten to remember how Esther saved her people from destruction.
