Thomas Edison developed the first practical incandescent light bulb in 1879 that could burn for over 700 hours powered by electricity generated from batteries. Before widespread electrical generation, power sources like petroleum, coal, and gas were used to produce energy to power light bulbs, but hydroelectric power from water and solar power have since been developed as well.
