The Missing Link
Science Indicator 4.6.2 Show that something may not work as well, or at all, if a part of it is missing, broken, worn out, mismatched, or incorrectly connected.
Definitions Missing- not found Broken- not working properly Worn out- cannot be repair Mismatched- two parts that don’t fit together Incorrectly Connected- put together the wrong way
Definitions Draw or write what you think each word means Missing- Broken- Worn out- Mismatched- Incorrectly Connected-
Background Information Flashlight History ,[object Object]
Although a flashlight is a relatively simple device, its invention did not occur until the late 19th century because it depended upon the earlier invention of the electric battery and electric light.
The first flashlight was invented in 1898 by Conrad Hubert.
In 1896, the first dry cell battery was invented. Unlike previous batteries, it used a paste electrolyte instead of a liquid. This was the first battery suitable for portable electrical devices, as it did not spill or break easily and worked in any orientation.
On January 10 1899, American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company obtained U.S. Patent No. 617,592 from David Misell, its English inventor. ,[object Object]
The company donated some of these devices to the New York City police, who responded favorably to them.
These early flashlights ran on zinc-carbon batteries, which could not provide a steady electric current and required periodic 'rest' to continue functioning.
Because these early flashlights also used energy-inefficient carbon-filament bulbs, "resting" occurred at short intervals. Consequently, they could be used only in brief flashes, hence the popular name flashlight.,[object Object]
Do you see the light? Take the flashlight and put one AA battery and one D battery in the flashlight. Turn the flashlight on. Write in your science journal what happened.
Do you see the light? Take the flashlight and put 2 D batteries in the flashlight. Turn the flashlight on. Write in your science journal what happened.
Perfect Match Take the deck of cards and remove the 2 of hearts, 7 of hearts, 9 of hearts, King of hearts and Ace of hearts. With a partner play Old Maid, with the Joker as the old maid. Write in your science journal what happened at the end of the game.
