field of Sewage Treatment Plants (STP). The team at OxyO, a unit
of Aadhithya Enterprises, uses cutting edge Biofilm Technology
in STP. Biological wastewater treatment systems improve not
only water quality but also human health.
 We are also the first company to introduce DIY kits for bio
treatment in small and medium set up.

Co Founder
Nagaswaroop is the driving force behind the
OxyO team. He oversees the skilled OxyO team
operations, as they serve municipal, industrial,
construction customers. He streamlines the water
management process to increase operational
performance, and minimise environmental
impact.
NAGASWAROOP
Founder
Arun Karunakaran leads Oxyo, a company using
innovative technology towards executing
wastewater engineering projects from concept to
commission. His previous experience working at
various companies in Singapore inspired him start
a go-green business and do his wee bit for mother
Earth. He is also the editor-in-chief of the blog
sustainableworkplaces.in which addresses
sustainability industry issues, solutions, and latest
trends.

10. What is Wastewater? Why STP?
 Wastewater refers to discharge from household seepage,
agriculture, industries and stormwater. The organic material
in sewage has detergents, pesticides, fats and oils. Many
types of microorganisms, like bacteria, viruses, protozoa and
helminths, can be present in wastewater. Nutrients
(Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Ammonia) and inorganic materials
(Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Nickel, Hydrogen Sulphide) are
also present in sewage.
 By keeping the hazardous effects of wastewater and its
usage for daily lives, STPs have become frontline warriors for
ensuring our future water supply.

11. On an average a person uses 135 – 150 litres of water, which ends up in
sewage treatment plants. If it can be completely recovered and reused
the problem will be resolved.

13. Activated Sludge Process Vs Biofilm
Technology: Why STP operators fail?
 Most operators treat wastewater via Activated Sludge Process
using suspended growth bacteria. This method involves
equalisation of waste and constant flow to the reactors - which
takes lots of time to achieve desired results. Besides, any
shortcoming in the design of reactor size and collection leads to
undertreatment and sizable sludge production.

14. OxyO’s Biofilm Technology
● With Biofilm technology, the various disadvantages of Activated
Sludge Treatment are negated. At OxyO, we build a robust
sewage treatment plant that recovers more than 98% of reusable
water. It meets pollution control board (PCB) standards for
general use like gardening, toilet flushing, floor washing. That
solves around 50% of the water requirement.
● On further filtration of salts and pathogens, we can use it for
shower and baths which covers an additional 40 % of the water
requirement. The remaining 10% is kept aside, keeping in mind
human sentiments. Instead, other solutions like rainwater
harvesting or bore well water are considered, which upon further
filtration can be made suitable for drinking and cooking.

16. At this stage, 80-85% of the water requirement is met. The balance water
for drinking and cooking can be procured from a bore well and through
rainwater harvesting. Water requirement for the premises can be met
through in a unique in-house system rather than depending on tankers.

We consulted Mr Kishore from OxyO about setting up a 20KLD Sewage
Treatment Plant in our premises. It was designed and commissioned in
Sep 2016. We are impressed by it's design, performance, and minimal
need for annual maintenance. The treated water used for flushing is
odourless. Every 6 months the sludge is applied to the plants in premises.
The treated water is also applied for gardening, and breeding of cat fish
inside a tank. There has been no untoward incident regarding
compliance with statutory bodies. The consultant has supported in all
matters relating to documentation and upkeep of the plant.

This is a new technology and the maintenance cost is surprisingly low in
comparison to others STP models. We love the fact that it requires very
less human intervention.
There are no changes in pH and TDS values, and we can directly use the

On a scale of 10, I would definitely rank them 9 or 9.5.
