Primary nursing is a nursing care delivery model where each patient is assigned a primary nurse who is responsible for their total care. The primary nurse model was developed in the 1960s to improve continuity of care. Under this model, nurses work in teams and each nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for a group of patients. This allows for stronger nurse-patient relationships and more individualized care. While it can improve patient satisfaction, the primary nurse model also requires additional nurse training and has higher costs than some other models.
