Activity:!!! CARTOONS!

Purpose:!!! VERBS AND VOCABULARY
READING AND WRITING
LISTENING AND SPEAKING
Process:
There are four different cartoon activities for you to pick and choose as you wish! Each of
them provide a different type of review and allow students to get an artistic break in the
day. You may want to print them on cardstock to make them easier to color and display.
Three are great for a substitute day:
One activity is for reading. The students read quote bubbles using the targeted skill. They
underline the grammar target and draw what they read. This tests their comprehension
and shows the grammar skill in context.
One activity is primarily for writing. The students write sentences with the targeted skill
and draw small illustrations to match. This tests their sentence structure and allows some
creative writing.
One activity is for dialogue creation. The students fill in quote bubbles with conversations
using the targeted skill and draw illustrations to match. This tests their sentence structure
and also allows students to draw from past vocabulary and skills to create a continuous
dialogue. It often provides more opportunity to practice the targeted skill in question
form rather than just statement form as well.
The fourth needs a Spanish teacher to moderate:
The students take turns volunteering sentences aloud using the targeted skill. The teacher
can check the grammar with each one. Whatever each volunteer comes up with, all the
students draw an illustration to match. This tests their comprehension and production. If
you think your students are successful enough with the grammar skill to not need your
monitoring, you could also have students do this in small groups. In small groups each
student gets more speaking time.
3. Escribe una conversación…
Create a comic strip dialogue between
two or more people trying to top each
other's stories from last weekend.
You can add extra conversation, but
you must include at least 4 preterite
and 4 imperfect verbs and at least one
must be in the form of a question.
4. Read the paragraphs
describing past events.
In each paragraph, underline
the preterite verbs and
circle the imperfect verbs.
Then draw an illustration of
what you read.
Ayer hacía sol y
hacía calor. Yo fui a
la playa con mis
amigos y nosotros
jugamos al
voleibol.
Cocinamos las
hamburguesas y
bebimos los
refrescos.
Mi abuela era muy vieja
y muy simpática. En
2010 ella se mudó a
Chicago. Ella conoció
a su esposo y ellos
comenzaron trabajos
nuevos.
Como niño, yo
montaba en
bicicleta mucho y
corría también. Yo
era muy activo. Un
día yo me caí de la
bicicleta y se
cortó la rodilla.
Yo no lloré, pero
caminé a mi casa.
El año pasado, mi
amiga estaba muy
feliz. Ella siempre
sonreía y hablaba
mucho. Al inicio del
año, ella ganó la
lotería. Ella
recibió un millón
dólares. Ella
compró muchas
cosas.
Nombre:
5. ¿Qué hiciste tú?
¿Qué hacías tú?
In each box, write 5
Spanish sentences
about what you did in
that season. At least 2
should be in the
preterite naming
something you did once.
At least 2 should be in
the imperfect saying
something you did often
that month.
6. Escribe una Conversación…
Create a comic strip dialogue
between two or more people
sharing things that happened in the
preterite and imperfect. You can
add extra conversation, but you
need to include at least 5 preterite
and imperfect phrases.
7. Let the class
decide! Take
turns telling
the class what
each of these
people did or
used to do.
Whatever the
class decides,
we all draw it!
Mark whether it
happened once
or repeatedly.
