1. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2015-08-30
LONDON, ON:
Fertility Consulting Group opens new office locally: wants to erase the stigma
around topics like gay men having babies, egg donation and surrogacy.
Egghelpers and Canadian Fertility Consultants are pleased to announce their new office
location in St Thomas- serving all of Southern Ontario. The office will house three staff
members from Southwestern Ontario. Including Angie Campeau- Canadian Fertility
Consultant’s Surrogacy Support Worker and Heather Gunn the newly appointed Director
of Donor Outreach
The expansion is a result of an increased need for egg donors in Canada. “Egg Donation
in Canada is safe, confidential and rewarding” - Says Gunn. “The demand for Egg
Donors exceeds our current availability, which is reflective of increasing infertility rates
among Canadians, as well many people choosing to become parents within a same sex
relationship- or single parent family.”
Heather brings to the role a background in blood, tissue and organ donation outreach,
partnership and event management. “I see it as highly relevant- the same way that
millions of Canadian depend on blood organ and tissue donations for their quality of life,
millions are seeking a miracle in the form of egg donation or surrogacy to complete their
dream of having a child”.
Already, Gunn says she is seeing mixed response in the community. “My primary focus
is to connect with the hundreds of interested donors who apply yearly, to facilitate the
process of becoming an egg donor and to reach new people by getting attention for this
cause. I’ve had VERY positive feedback from potential donors, people who have thought
about doing egg donation or surrogacy for years but wasn’t sure it was an option, or how
to start the process. Unfortunately I’ve also received a lot of pushback from my
community partners I came to depend on - Including both Western University and
Fanshawe College, who have declined to provide space though both provide it to other
similar causes such a blood, organ and stem cell donor recruitment and many other
public and private organizations. “
“The stigma we are facing in this right now is frustrating, but I’ll keep working to
open minds and reach more people!” Says Gunn. “I think there is a misconception
about how and why we need to raise awareness for this cause. The nature of this
type of donation is that it has to be voluntary, it’s a commitment of time and you
need to be the right kind of person doing it for the right reasons- and we are
providing an option for them to safely pursue donating in a rewarding way
