AmeriCorps NCCC is organizing a community day on June 5th to involve the people of Bemidji in developing the garden at the local food shelf. A NCCC team is assisting the food shelf with its five year garden project, which will provide fresh produce for those in need. The community day aims to unite the community around establishing the garden. It will offer opportunities to learn gardening skills. The event coordinator hopes that both new and previous volunteers will participate.

Community Groves℠ resources and best practices enable local organizations to address issues of nutrition, land use, and food access through tree planting and care. Slum families live amidst dirt leading to contamination of water, spread of flies, rodents, mosquitoes, which carry diseases e.g. diarrhea, typhoid, jaundice, dengue, chikungunya, malaria. U¬5 undernutrition in the poorest urban quartile are 2.5 times higher than the richest urban quartile.
Practical approaches:
1.City map: Govt. of India’s NUHM & Housing Policy mandate mapping of all listed/unlisted/hidden slums on city map. UHRC's social facilitators, women's group members with govt. ANMs, Anganwadi workers identified, mapped hidden, unlisted and newly formed slums in Indore.
Slum Women’s groups use hand-drawn basti maps to a)prevent exclusion of family from lists for housing, entitlements; b)Track access to health services e.g. vaccination, ANC, c) identify recent migrants, vulnerable slums.
2.Basti women’s groups in Indore & Agra function as slum women’s health groups (Mahila Arogya Samitis or MAS) mandated in Govt. of India’s NUHM to strengthen demand for health, environmental services. With knowledge, confidence & skills, women’s groups increase access to Govt. address proof and Picture ID.
3. MAS members save monthly to build savings pool. This saving helps in time of health emergency, marriage, child's education, rescues poor people from moneylenders.
Based on Indore & Agra experience, India’s National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) mandates Mahila Arogya Samiti as a demand side strategy and creation a Revolving Community Fund as two of eight core NUHM strategies (Government of India, 2013).
4. With motivation youth-children groups bring more vigour to community efforts. Youth requests to authorities for streets, garbage cleaning. Basti children’s group members apply & avail govt. scholarship.
5. Outreach Health Services by Govt & Pvt Providers in deprived clusters are facilitated by basti women’s groups. They help ANMs identify vulnerable pockets, improve service access, infection prevention, promote healthy behaviours.
With mentoring support from UHRC, they promote nutrition & health with simple recipes e.g. sprouted cooked, garnished black gram. Women take up gardening for nutrition despite space constraints.
6. Women’s groups submit requests to different depts. for paving of basti lanes, water supply, sewage system, electric connections.
7. Ladies & children making jewellery & greeting cards gives creative & psycho-emotional energy despite living in dirt. Creative art stimulates right brain which enhances skills, intellectual responses, learning ability, confidence. These help slum populations gather more strength and hope to better deal with the vagaries of life.
8. Women’s Livelihoods: Tailoring & Stitching training centres for women are run. Women/girls stitch frocks, trousers, girls’ tops, shirts at home on per piece basis. Women also sell vegetables, grocery, run slum convenience store, tiffin service.

It promotes local capabilities and partnerships with local and international organizations. Its goals are to increase incomes, reduce dropout rates, ensure access to healthcare and education, empower women and local leaders, and develop basic infrastructure.

Every Friday, they sacrifice their afternoon to clean their campus grounds, do training, or go on nature visits. Empty Bowls began in 1990 as a small food drive fundraiser and has grown into an international charitable movement celebrating its 25th anniversary. It combines art and charity by hosting events where ceramic bowls made by volunteers are sold for $15 each to raise money for local food banks. Wittenberg University has held its own Empty Bowls event annually since 1994, raising over $360,000 total over 21 years for a local food bank by selling over 1,000 handmade bowls each year. This year's event set new records by raising $47,393 through bowl sales and donations to support those experiencing hunger in the community.

Mutual Aid Midlands Annual Report 2020
Mutual Aid Midlands provided various services to over 500 individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their services included a 24-hour hotline, food and supply deliveries, advocacy efforts, and community engagement events. They had over 70 volunteers and raised over $28,000 for their efforts. Looking ahead, they plan to expand food access programs, engage in more neighborhood-level mutual aid, and conduct educational campaigns about mutual aid.

Notre Dame College has a long history of community service and civic engagement. Through programs like FalconCorps and with the help of an AmeriCorps VISTA, the college has been able to expand its efforts to address food insecurity in the local community. Over the past year, student volunteers increased the hours and pounds of food donated to local food banks and pantries. While community support for service activities is a strength, maintaining and growing student involvement remains a challenge. The college aims to foster a campus culture of service and could benefit from designating staff and resources to coordinate and sustain service programs into the future.

This report summarizes the work of an AmeriCorps VISTA member placed at Heidelberg University who helped connect campus resources to community needs in Seneca County, Ohio, which has high poverty and unemployment. The VISTA member created new service initiatives, supported existing programs, and helped over 500 campus community members participate in service events benefiting 30 local agencies. This expanded service learning opportunities for students and strengthened partnerships between the university and county organizations.

Trying to predict what is going to happen, trying to sift through all the contradicting information, trying to visualize what this means for my agency and the State of Missouri…but the truth is…I still have a current job to do and right now I need to focus on the Agency’s Comprehensive Community Needs Assessment(CNNA) .
I start county Focus Groups next week to gather more primary data for the development our CCNA report. I modified the Half in Ten poverty quiz and merge it with regional and state data to produce a PowerPoint that can be utilized to start discussions on poverty. I am unaware if you can take it from my FB page or the “SlideShare” web-site and modify it for your own region and state. If you cannot pull the PowerPoint from the web, just email me and I will send a modifiable version. I hope you find it useful.

We are hoping to have people help in the garden, grow their own food and learn more about AmeriCorps NCCC. A NCCC team is assisting the Bemidji Community Food Shelf in the start of its five year garden project. The garden serves as a source of fresh produce to be use in distributing to those in need. The community day strives to unite the community and establish the garden for BCFS. There will be various opportunities to learn how to garden. “The youth of the community will be much appreciated and we are looking forward to working with previous volunteers as well as new volunteers at the Bemidji Community Food Shelf,” stated Kathrine Hamilton, a coordinator of the community day. AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, 10-month, residential, national service program in which 2,800 young adults - all 18 to 24 years old- serve nationwide each year. The NCCC program oversees two service tracks – NCCC and FEMA Corps – and members in these programs serve in teams of eight to twelve on four service projects during their service. NCCC members serve on projects that address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation, and urban and rural development. FEMA Corps members focus solely on emergency management and long-term recovery activities through FEMA. The North Central Region campus in Vinton, Iowa is one of five regional campuses. The other campuses are located in Baltimore, Md.; Sacramento, Calif.; Vicksburg, Miss.; and Denver, Colo. In exchange for their service, members receive $5,645 to help pay for college or to pay back existing student loans. Other benefits include a small living stipend, room and board, leadership development, increased self-confidence, and the knowledge that, through active citizenship, people can indeed make a difference.
