George Washington was the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. He commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and helped establish the U.S. Constitution which replaced the Articles of Confederation. John Adams was the second president from 1797 to 1801 and had previously served as the first vice president. He was an American Founding Father, statesman, and diplomat who advocated for American independence and a strong central government.
