The President of India is elected through an indirect election process involving an electoral college consisting of elected members of parliament and state legislative assemblies. To be elected president, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of votes. If no candidate receives a majority in the first round, additional rounds are held eliminating the lowest vote-getters and redistributing their votes until one candidate secures over 50% of votes. The president can be removed through impeachment for violating the constitution, which requires a two-thirds majority vote in both houses of parliament.
