NSF Career Awards
                           Received in 2010



                 •   Nezih Pala’s research on Nanoscale Multi-element
                     Plasmonic Devices for Tunable THz Detection
                     Applications will result in new technologies in
                     medical imaging and diagnosis, chemical and
                     biological sensing, and security surveillance.


•   Vagelis Hristidis’ award to investigate and
    create methodologies allowing
    communities to become more effective in
    managing disasters, an important topic in
    our region.

Haiti Relief
                            Anticipated Funding



We anticipate awards to implement:

•   A NeighborhoodHELP program in Little Haiti neighborhoods.
•   A physical therapy program for amputees related to Haiti earthquake.
•   Mental health services for first responders in Haiti.
•   A program to provide support for Haitian community agencies locally.

•To be coordinated through Center for Research on U.S. Latino HIV/AIDS and
Drug Abuse(CRUSADA)

•Fosters collaboration among the Center, the College of Nursing and Health
Sciences, the Wertheim College of Medicine, and the College of Arts and
Sciences.

Noteworthy Funding
                        Received Since January 2010

• Mario de la Rosa will study how substance abuse and HIV
  risk behavior of Latina mothers and daughters are
  influenced by changes in familial mechanisms, and
  cultural processes.

• Patricia Barbetta aims to increase the State of Florida’s
  capacity to prepare and retain highly qualified personnel to
  provide instructional services to students with disabilities,
  and will coordinate the statewide Autism and
  Severe/Profound Disabilities Endorsements Support
  Program.


                  • Osama Mohammed will integrate FIU’s research and
                    educational activities in power systems with the US Navy
                    all-electric ship mission.

                                        in Energy


College of Engineering TOP URBAN PUBLIC RESEARCH UNIVERSITY
                       and Computing received funding from Department of Energy as
part of the Obama Administration’s $100m initiative for Smart Grid Workforce Training
and Development:

1.   Smart Grid Workforce Training
     A Local Partnership with FPL – ($350,000 for FIU)
2.   Strategic Training and Education in Power Systems
     A National Partnership with University of Minnesota – ($200,000 for FIU)

     In announcing the awards, Secretary Chu said: “Building an operating smart grid infrastructure will put
           tens of thousands of Americans to work,” “This is a great opportunity for workers to upgrade their
           skills and earn more, or for laid off workers from other industries to start fresh in a new and growing
           field.”

NSF Career Awards Received in 2010 • Nezih Pala’s research on Nanoscale Multi-element Plasmonic Devices for Tunable THz Detection Applications will result in new technologies in medical imaging and diagnosis, chemical and biological sensing, and security surveillance. • Vagelis Hristidis’ award to investigate and create methodologies allowing communities to become more effective in managing disasters, an important topic in our region. 10

Haiti Relief Anticipated Funding We anticipate awards to implement: • A NeighborhoodHELP program in Little Haiti neighborhoods. • A physical therapy program for amputees related to Haiti earthquake. • Mental health services for first responders in Haiti. • A program to provide support for Haitian community agencies locally. •To be coordinated through Center for Research on U.S. Latino HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse(CRUSADA) •Fosters collaboration among the Center, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Wertheim College of Medicine, and the College of Arts and Sciences. 11

Noteworthy Funding Received Since January 2010 • Mario de la Rosa will study how substance abuse and HIV risk behavior of Latina mothers and daughters are influenced by changes in familial mechanisms, and cultural processes. • Patricia Barbetta aims to increase the State of Florida’s capacity to prepare and retain highly qualified personnel to provide instructional services to students with disabilities, and will coordinate the statewide Autism and Severe/Profound Disabilities Endorsements Support Program. • Osama Mohammed will integrate FIU’s research and educational activities in power systems with the US Navy all-electric ship mission. 12

Smart Grid Workforce Training A Local Partnership with FPL – ($350,000 for FIU) 2. Strategic Training and Education in Power Systems A National Partnership with University of Minnesota – ($200,000 for FIU) In announcing the awards, Secretary Chu said: “Building an operating smart grid infrastructure will put tens of thousands of Americans to work,” “This is a great opportunity for workers to upgrade their skills and earn more, or for laid off workers from other industries to start fresh in a new and growing field.” 16
