A group of 7 people who attended the Service Design Network Global Conference 2014 in Stockholm on October 6,7,8 2014, have shared their experiences, take-aways and ideas in a Whatsapp group, during and after the conference.
This deck shares their findings with a wider audience, hoping to initiate a healthy debate in the service design community, on where we ant to go with our conferences. We hope to see you all next year, to share an even better experience together!
For the TMD course, I had to attend 5 seminars, 2 organized by Artevelde, University of Applied Languages and 3 self-chosen seminars with topics like Investing and Sustainability.
As a female entrepreneur, working with hundreds of people in the last thirty years, Cyndy McDonald has observed the same mistakes being made over and over by new or experienced IEC's. In this session, Cyndy will review the top five mistakes and how to avoid them in your practice. How to get new clients, what to charge, how to manage clients are some of the topics discussed.

It was a humbling experience to be invited to share some career nuggets based on my experience with Covenant University students. I took up the mantle in hopes that I am able to contribute to bridging the gap between what is learnt within the four walls of a university and the realities of the workplace. I'm still on my journey, hence a privilege to share.

13/05/2022 (16.30-18): Business Start Up by Gequinn Mattox
3. Entrepreneurship 101
by Charlotte Christensen
Content Summary
• Career of the speaker
• The life of an expat
• Sustainability
• Group discussion on 3 different isues
• Importance of Networking
4. Reflection
• The one thing that stood out the most was the sustainability issues. We didn’t look at
some vague issues we actually studied cases in break-out rooms and discussed them as
a group later. This made everyone involved even in an online seminar. And it taught me
the importance of involving people and letting them participate. This woke me up from
an otherwise generic lecture. The other information was interesting but already things
that we have studied before. I did like it when Ms. Christensen gave examples of her
experiences. This makes her lecture a more tangable side.
5. Student Entrepreneur
by Rick Molyneux and Laura Bernazano
Content Summary
• Introduction of the speakers
• Wallin
• Maison Vermont
• Challenges
• Combining school and entrepreneurship
6. Reflection
• The thing that struck me the most was the lack of sustainability aspects in one of the
companies. I was hoping that with a younger entrepreneur this would be more
important but it wasn’t pressent at all. I did learn about the preserving flower concept
and that was something I didn’t know before.
7.
8. The flower Industry:
The flower industry is an estemated 64.4 billion euro industry. I decided to do some
research on this topic because when I was at the Student entrepreneur seminar I was
wondering about climate impact when the entrepreneur was explaining her business. The
reasen this interested me is because when I was on a vacation in africa i could notice the
negative impacts of the cut flower industry.
9. Carbon emission
• Greenhouses are heated with gases = lots of CO2
• 1200 stems of roses are about 2,200 kg of CO2 in Kenya
• 1200 stems of roses are about 35,000 kg of CO2 in the Netherlands
• Roughly 3 kg of CO2 for 1 rose.
10. Pesticides
• Because of the different varieties of flowers, farmers use a lot of different types of
pesticides. This often causes whole areas to be poisonous and infertile. If it happens to get
into the water supply then this can poison even a bigger area.
11. Reflection on the research
• As beautiful as flowers are, the industry is a lot less nice. However, I was surprised to
learn that flowers from Kenya were less polluting than the ones from the Netherlands.
However, in the Netherlands, the regulations on pesticides are a lot higher so while Kenyan
flowers are less polluting they still might be worse for the environment.
12. Financing Your Business workshop
by Rene Cruz
Content Summary
• Logistics for Start-Ups
• Financing tips
• Capital Terms
• Funding Options
• Small Business Resources
13. Reflection
The Seminar wasn’t wat I was hoping for. It was really the way to specific to American
companies. Many of the funding possibilities that they proposed are not a possibility in
Belgium. They also didn’t go over the cost of every funding option. This made it quite
hard to look for the best option from an economic point of view. It did however show me
how America has a lot more opportunities than Belgium, of course, these come with
risks.
14. Motivation
• Last year I started my own company and I
would like to expand it in the future. Of
course, I will need funding so what better
opportunity to learn. I was also hoping to
learn about how to ask for funds.
15. Legal Bootcamp – How to Start & Grow Your
Business
By Derek Hopfner
Content Summary
• Business Formation
• Incorporation
• Business Operations
• Intellectual Property
• Resources
16. Reflection
• The seminar was a start your business 101. It went over all the basic things you need to
know to start your business. I learned a lot of new things about intellectual property and
how to protect your intellectual property.
• The seminar gave me a slightly different look at how to start a business from my
original point of view. I never think about failure, however just because you believe in
your business, it doesn’t mean that nothing could go wrong.
17. Motivation
• I Was hoping to learn more about the
legal aspects of starting a company, turns
out most of them I already knew. And
while my main focus was on learning the
legal aspect, I was interested in the
starting up process in the USA and the
differences between The US and Belgium.
18. Start Your Business
(Basics)
By Earlene
Caraway
Content Summary
• Define your business idea
• Understand what a Business Plan is and why
it’s necessary
• Business legal structure, and Permits &
licenses requirements
• Where to turn for help
• Q&A’s
19. Reflection
• This was surprisingly interesting. I believed that I already knew how a business was set
up. But this seminar first went over the taught proces. And the aspects you need to think
about before you start. This made me question my business as a whole and I learned a
lot from it.
20. Motivation
• When I started my company I went a bit
too fast and I never did research on the
basics of starting a company. So I actually
wanted to check if I went over the proper
steps and if there was something I missed;
22. Reflection
• I took this seminar as an extra, however, it was really fun to listen to. It was more like a
talk than a lecture and the speaker talked a lot about her own experiences and which
made it more relatable. She mentioned briefly the strengths of a small business
compared to a big one and that a small business should focus on those. This was only a
short explanation in the seminar but it made the biggest impact on me.
23. Motivation
• When I was looking for seminars this was
a backup, however after the previous
seminars, I was always able to learn
something that I could apply to my own
business so I decided that It might be
interesting. Again the main reason for
following this seminar is to learn more
about starting up a business, as I just
started one recently.
