Animal cruelty can take many forms and often occurs in unexpected places. An art gallery displayed a dog that was left to starve to death as the main artwork. Reports of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment were made over 4,000 times in one county last year, ranging from dog fighting to physical abuse to animals being set on fire. One instance involved a dog named Merrick who was left untreated for a large tumor and without food or water for three weeks by its owner, becoming severely emaciated and infested with insects before escaping and later dying after being rescued. All animals deserve to feel safe in their homes without abuse or neglect.
