Elie Wiesel witnessed immense death and horrors during the Holocaust that left lasting impacts. He survived forced labor, marches, starvation, disease, and abuse while watching his family be torn apart and killed. His relationship with his father grew strong as they supported each other during their imprisonment. Many Jews lost faith in God, themselves, and the humanity of others and simply wanted to die to escape the trauma. The Nazis believed they had ultimate power over Jews, systematically carrying out the planned extermination of over 6 million through shootings, gassings, starvation and more. The immense death and loss of families was a terrible tragedy.
