he is trapped within this institution and how he is alone.

illustrates that there is unknown as we can't see the end of the
corridor, foreshadowing potential danger.
The close up of the boys playing their game builds the suspense
further and makes their setting seem sinister and dangerous.

The title sequence of bold, glowing red writing across the center of
the screen contrasts with the black background and the dark setting
and causes it to stand out.
The serif font creates a sense of traditionality which also reflects
the era that it is based.
The flashing lights during the first opening sequence display the
horror element of the show and builds up the suspense. It allows the
audience to be unsure of the danger that is potentially approaching.
Within the opening scene the fast-paced cuts build up the tension.

Diegetic sound of an alarm going off while the worker is trying to
escape creates an increasing sense of panic along with the sound
of the flickering lights which becomes evidently loud.
The ambient sound of his heavy breathing diverts the audience's
attention from the setting as they then become attentive to the
man to see what happens next.
The diegetic dialogue between the four boys allows the audience
to understand what is going on in their basement and what is
going on in their game. The lack of non-diegetic music here builds
up suspense as there is a constant silence.

80’s inspired costumes depicts the time that the tv show is set.
The mise en scene of their game, portrays and foreshadows future events
that will take place. The use of these props helps link other events together.
At the beginning of the pilot the mise en scene of the lab coat reflects the
sci-fi theme of the show and how there is an underlying mystery in this so-
called suburban town.
At the beginning of the episode, it takes place at an undercover lab and the
use of lowkey lighting reflects the secrecy of their research while also
embedding fear within the characters and the viewers.
