Workshop - The Future's in the Past
ICARUS-Meeting #19 | 5th co:op partner meeting
29–31 May 2017, The National Archives of Estonia, Nooruse 3, Tartu, Estonia
This document summarizes a research project studying the works of Christian Ackermann, a talented 17th century woodcarver in Estonia. The project's goals are to study Ackermann's works, historical woodworking techniques, and locate works in churches. Researchers from several Estonian institutions are collaborating using techniques like x-ray, pigment analysis, and 3D modeling to document and analyze artworks. The project will create an online database and conduct public outreach from 2016-2020, focusing on Ackermann's works in churches across Estonia.
This document summarizes social tagging features and usage statistics from the British Library, UK National Archives, and related Flickr collections. It finds that the National Archives Discovery interface had the most user tags due to its open online registration. Top tags varied by collection but included location, personal, and subject tags. The document recommends enabling tagging for all users, providing clear instructions, empowering users through APIs and personal tagging views, and monitoring contributor patterns over time.

They launched an online search catalogue in 2004, began providing digital content in 2005, and have since added an online reading room, photo collection, map collection, and films, sounds and videos. Their main databases include AIS with over 9 million record titles, SAAGA with over 17.5 million images, and Fotis with over 650,000 photos. Usage has increased significantly between 2011-2015, showing over 1 million online visits in 2015. New developments are ongoing to improve services and engage with users.
International cooperation of Lithuanian archives occurs through agreements with neighboring countries like Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Russia, and others like Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. This cooperation includes exchanging professional information and publications, organizing joint exhibitions, and sharing digitized and microfilmed copies of relevant documents. Some notable exchanges include copies of letters from Lithuanian dukes to Latvia and documents from Germany. Cooperation also occurs between Lithuanian archives and institutions like Stanford University to share copies of historical documents.
