Health Informatics Institute – Algoma University
In association with: Nikki Shaw, PhD, Ed Hirvi, MD, Russell
Tull, MD & The Group Health Centre
Presented by: Suzanne McGuire, MA
 A patient’s ability to access their medical
information has been a topic of discussion in
healthcare since the 1970s before the concept of
the electronic health record (EHR) was even a
reality(Aday & Andersen, 1974)
 One way this is now being promoted is through the
use of electronic patients portals (EPPs)
 Web-based programs giving patients access
to information from their electronic health
record (EHR) and doctor’s office
Patients can:
 Contact doctor’s office
 Order prescription refills
 Setup appointments
 View test results
Pagliari, Detmer & Singleton
(2007)
 Gives patients a chance to become more informed
about their health and care
 Easy communication with doctor’s office &
pharmacist
 Access lab test results & electronic health record
Common portal users:
 Caucasian, female
 Mid-high SES
 Computer & health literate
 Patients with chronic health conditions
 Measure use of the myCARE portal at the
Group Health Centre (GHC) in Sault Ste.
Marie, ON
 Understand the motivation behind why or
why not patients choose to engage in it’s
use
 Official portal for the Group Health Centre
 Currently in its pilot phase
 GHC houses multiple physicians & medical
services
 Serves over 60,000 Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma
District residents
http://www.ghc.on.ca/about.php
 Group Health Centre
 NOHFC
 NOSM
 ESRI Canada
 Mixed-method, cross-sectional examination
of electronic, demographic & interview data
examining:
1.) The patient people that do & do not enroll
in myCARE
2.) Motivation to use or refuse myCARE
3.) Usage patterns of specific services
 Patients of Dr. Ed Hirvi & Dr. Russell Tull had the
opportunity to register for myCARE before the
study began
 Patients retain access to myCARE regardless of
their willingness to participate
 Access to myCARE required a letter or in-office
invitation which included a login name and
password to enter the secure website
Statistical analysis of:
 Demographic information
 Usage rates for patients that registered
 Use of specific myCARE services
 Interviews with 30 random patients
 Equal mix of people who did/did not register
 Want to understand:
1.) Patients’ decision to accept or reject myCARE
2.) Motivation to use myCARE services
 Perceived value and/or risks
 Age distribution
 Barriers to use (i.e. computer/internet access)
 Patient concerns (i.e. privacy)
 Portal value will be assessed
 GHC gains a clear picture of who uses their portal
 Helps us understand patient desire to engage in
healthcare
 Examine usage rates with other portals
 Explore methods of increasing portal usage
by patients
 Measure possible health benefits of portals
