ultrasound
imaging
Ultrasound imaging also called sonography,
involves exposing part of the body to high
frequency sound waves to produce, pictures
of the inside of the body
Ultrasound examination do not use ionizing
radiations ( as used in x ray)
Because ultrasound images are captured in
real time,they can show the structure and
movement of the body internal organs as we
as blood flowing through blood vessels

Popular due to availability, Speed,low cost
and no radiation
Applied in obstetrics, cardiology inner
medicine, urology.
Ongoing research to improve image quality
speed and New application areas such a

ultrasound
Ultrasound images are acquired
rapidly enough to show the motion
of organs and structure in the
beating heart Can be seen, even in
a fetus.
Ultrasound is effectively used to
check for growth and foreign
objects that are close to the body
surface such as those in thyroid
gland, breasts,testes and limbs as
well as some lymph nodes.

7. Procedure
for
ultrasound
If certain parts of the abdomen are
being examined, people may be asked
to refrain from eating and drinking for
serveral hours before the test for
examination of female reproductive
organs, women may be asked to drink a
large amount of fluid to fill their bladder.
Usually, The examiner place thick gel
on the skin over the area to be
examined to ensure good sound
transmission A handheld transducer is
placed on the sikn and moved over the
area to be evaluated.

of ultrasound
They are generally painless and do
not require needles, injections.
Patients aren’t exposed to ionizing
radiations, making the procedure
safer tham diagnostic techniques
such as x-ray and CT scan.
Ultrasound capture images of soft
tissue that don’t show upwell on x-ray

9. Disadvantages
of the
ultrasound
Insertion of the transducer
into the body may cause
some discomfort. Rarely
tissue is damaged causing
bleeding or infection
Bone organs can block
ultrasonography.thus using it
to obtain image of certain
structure.(Those behind
bone or gas is difficult.)
