All people who contributed to the arts in some way – discuss contributions and how what they have contributed is used to tell a story today. Does the story connect back to their personalities? How?
Debes (1969) – perhaps coined term “Visual Literacy” We are going to take all of these definitions and combine them for the purpose of this course.
Our definition for the class – we will focus on the visual but not forget the other senses. Think the enhanced use of 3-D films or multi-sensory shows at places like Disney. Refer to use of music in advertising or even sitcom opening songs.
Some reasons for studying visual literacy
Do you need to understand elements of visual literacy to understand art? After watching video discuss why art is valuable to society. Then discuss why understanding of art, via visual literacy techniques, increases art’s value.
Discuss questions with top image first. Then present bottom image which is an advertisement for Three Bond Super Glue – allusion to Sistine Chapel image. Discuss how the top image has been used to create an advertisement that could work without understanding of allusion but not fully.
