A sneak preview of the installation “MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, PLEASE?” and the
Maarten Baas 101 Chair and the Maarten Baas Table presented during the Salone del Mobili in
Milan from the 04-th till the 09-th of April 2017
This installation and the chair came to be thanks to the intervention of Anne van der Zwaag
Lensvelt is a non design amsterdam based furniture label established in 1962
Lensvelt provides architects and interior designers the tools to make better interiors
Lensvelt want to contribute to a new world: greener, better and more social
Lensvelt has shown over the years as a committed label, which showed distinct and often
award winning presentations during the Salone del Mobile in Milan
Lensvelt hit a bridge between the commercial world and the most innovative artists As Studio
Job, Marcel Wanders, Bertjan Pot, Richard Hutten, Lernert & Sander, Atelier Van Lieshout,
Maarten Van Severen and others
The upcoming collaboration in Milan, between Lensvelt and Maarten Baas, fits perfectly into
this series of events
Maarten Baas (February 19, 1978) is a Dutch artist/designer. Baas is often described as a so-
called author-designer, whose designs balance on the fine line between art and design
Baas is seen as one of the most influential Dutch designers of the early 21st century
Baas’ work is known as rebellious, humorous, intellectual, artistic and theatrical
Baas’ has found himself an autonomous place within the world of design, for which he works in
limited editions, series, installations, public space, architecture, interior design, theatre and
performances

Anne van der Zwaag is an entrepreneur,
curator, writer and consultant in the
creative and commercial industries.
She is the director and owner of designfair
OBJECT in Rotterdam, in which over 150
designers participate yearly, and the
Amsterdam based platform BIG ART.
Anne curated large interdisciplinary
exhibitions such as BAL! (Paleis Soestdijk),
WIT (Nederlands Fotomuseum), PASTOE
(Kunsthal) and wrote several publications on
design, art, fashion, architecture and colour.
She has a column in the ELLE Decoration
and Architect and is a guest tutor at art
and design schools in the Netherlands and
abroad. Anne is active in many boards, jury’s
and advise committees and speaks regularly
about what moves her in life.

RICHARD HUTTEN (1989 )
Richard Hutten launched ‘No Sign Of Design’ in 1989,
as a part of his graduation work at the Design Academy
in Eindhoven. An anti-design against the very decorative
designs which were mainstream at that time. With this work,
Richard Hutten ‘reintroduced the archetype into design’,
according to design connaisseurs.
‘No Sign of Design’ scored big time in Asia, where Hutten’s
popularity as a designer reached unprecedented scores.
Especially in Japan and Korea people loved his simple
and functional designs. Hutten has been one of the most
influential designers in the world ever since.

as a so-called author-designer, whose designs balance on the fine line between art
and design
Baas is seen as one of the most influential Dutch designers of the early 21st century
His work is known as rebellious, humorous, intellectual, artistic and theatrical
He has found himself an autonomous place within the world of design, for which he
works in limited editions, series, installations, public space, architecture, interior
design, theatre and performances
His work is part of major museum collections such as MoMA, Victoria & Albert, Les
Arts Decoratifs, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Die Neue Sammlung,
Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum, and included in private collections of Brad
Pitt, John McEnroe, Kanye West and Adam Lindemann a.o.
He also works for exclusive brands such as Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Dior, Dom
Ruinart and Berluti
In 1996 he started at the Design Academy Eindhoven
His graduation collection Smoke, a series of burnt furniture, was Baas’ claim to
instant worldwide fame in 2002

In 2004 Baas opened an exhibition at Moss Gallery in New York. ‘Where There’s
Smoke…’ consisted of 25 burnt design classics, such as the Zig-Zag chair by
Rietveld, the Carlton cabinet by Sottsass and Chair Nr. 14 by Thonet
Pieces were purchased by tennis player John McEnroe and Brad Pitt
According to American design critic Alice Rawsthorn, ‘Smoke’ reflects on our ideal
of beauty, but also on ‘the violence of our time‘
Smoke was succeeded by many other projects
At the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Baas was granted much praise for his Clay series
This series of furniture is hand made out of epoxy clay

In 2009, Baas designed a series of clocks called ‘Real Time’
Real Time is a series of 12-hour movies in which an actor is indicating the current
time minute by minute
The Grandfather clock looks like a classic Frisian clock
The illusion is provided, of someone being inside and manually marking the time
onto the face of the clock, by using a marker
A Real Time Grandfather clock is part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection
Baas was named ‘Designer of the Year’ by Design Miami in 2009, for which he set up
a major retrospective exhibition in Miami
According to design journalist Chris Reinewald Baas belongs to a group of Dutch
designers like Ted Noten who, after Droog Design and their 'conceptual' approach,
have inhabited an almost cabaret-like approach to design, "detached from all
marketing requirements by the industry."

During the exhibition "Hide & Seek" in the Groninger Museum,
Maarten Baas showed a preview of its collaboration with non-design label Lensvelt
.
"May I have your attention please?" Is the title of a large installation consisting
sound of dozens of speakers, which whispering voices
All kinds of stories, opinions, ideas, poems and anecdotes are whispered to the
public
Across the system, the new chair designed for Lensvelt, Maarten Baas takes delivery
of all messages
During the upcoming Salone del Mobile in April the installation will be expanded with
a room full of the Maarten Baas 101 chair
The clustered speakers seem talking people, the empty seats seem receptive
audience
Like the speakers are all the chairs different and designed exclusively for Lensvelt.
The chair is a mass-produced chair, but by a clever adaptation of the production
every seat has a slightly different shape and therefore a unique character.
Maarten Baas is moving in different areas of design, art and theater.
With the exhibition Hide & Seek, Maarten Baas confirms the unique place he
acquired.
