This document announces a course on tunnel characterization, design, and construction to be held from July 3-19, 2012 in Bogota, Colombia. The course will be taught in English by four international experts in the field and is aimed at engineers working on Colombia's infrastructure, mining, and energy projects. It will cover topics such as rock mass characterization, design criteria, construction methods, environmental aspects, and tunnel monitoring. The course is being organized by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia's civil engineering department and supported by the Colombian Geotechnical Society.
This document provides a preface and introduction to notes on rock engineering. The preface states that while tools are becoming more sophisticated, fundamental design questions remain regarding acceptable risk levels and tolerable deformation in civil and mining projects. The notes aim to address these questions through case studies that illustrate concepts and practical approaches, ranging from simple estimates to numerical models. Readers are encouraged to provide feedback to help improve the notes.
The introduction provides biographical information on Dr. Evert Hoek, the author of the notes. It outlines his educational background in mechanical engineering and post-graduate specialization in stress analysis. It also details his professional experience applying stress analysis to rock problems, academic positions held, consulting work, and publications and awards
This document discusses the development of rock engineering as a discipline. It notes that while some work on rock behavior dates back to the 1700s, rock engineering emerged as a distinct field in the 1960s following some catastrophic dam and mine failures that demonstrated limitations in predicting rock mass behavior. Some key developments included early work by Coulomb, Stini, von Karman and Terzaghi. The 1959 Malpasset dam failure in France and 1963 Vajont dam failure in Italy prompted significant research efforts. The 1960 Coalbrook mine collapse in South Africa also drove advances in coal pillar design methods. The document aims to review the formal establishment of rock engineering as an engineering discipline from this pivotal period in the early 1960s onward.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

2012
Caracterización, Diseño y Construcción de Túneles
(CHARACTERIZATION, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF TUNNELS)
(3 al 19 de Julio) – Curso DICTADO en idioma inglés
2. Caracterización, Diseño y Construcción de Túneles
(CHARACTERIZATION, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF TUNNELS)
