this is the main and largest city of the Czech Republic. It lies slightly to the north
from the center of Bohemia on the Vltava river, within the Central region, which is
the administrative center, but as a separate region is a part of it. It is located a
large part of state institutions and a number of other organizations and
companies. President of the Republic is located here, the government, central
state authorities and the High Court. Moreover, Prague is the seat of a number of
other offices, both central and the local government units, are located here also
headquarters of most political parties and the headquarters of almost all
churches, religious and other associations with nationwide application registered
in the Czech Republic.
In its present form the Prague developed eleven centuries. As the historical
metropolis of Bohemia in the past settlement town of Czech princes and kings,
Roman emperors and German capital of Czechoslovakia. Currently situated in the
territory of 496 square kilometers and has a 1 233 211 inhabitants (CSO statement
on 31 December 2008). Prague metropolitan area was in 2004 (according to
Eurostat) 1 964 750 inhabitants.
Prague is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The
historical city center with a unique panorama of Prague Castle, the largest castle
complex in the world, is a conservation area by UNESCO. It is the historic core of
the city and many attractions annually attract millions of tourists from countries
around the world, making Prague one of the most visited cities in Europe.
