What if municipal WiFi wasn’t provided by the Googles of the world, but by the city transit authority? Using technology from startup Veniam, city-wide WiFi could come from a fleet of moving vehicles.
Technology from San Francisco-based Veniam turns municipal buses into wireless hotspots that spread Internet access across urban areas or controlled environments (think seaport or shipping container terminal).
Veniam, a company that leverages moving vehicles to bring more complete wireless Internet to municipalities, today announced that it has raised a $4.9 million Series A round of funding led by True Ventures, and participated in by Union Square Ventures. The company told TechCrunch that its prior angel investors also took part in the deal on a pro-rata basis, keeping their percentages in the firm whole.
You've heard of the "internet of things." Get ready for the "internet of moving things."
That's how a start-up called Veniam describes its mission to transform all the cars, trucks, and buses on city streets into a mobile WiFi network connecting anything and anyone around it. Veniam has already brought a version of this free public network to Porto, Portugal, where it's using some 600 vehicles to test the technology in a "living lab."
Jon Callaghan, who sits on my board and has been my coach in the venture world, often says that the best opportunities are the ones that you know when you see them. His words were ringing in my ears when I first met João Barros for coffee in San Francisco in June of this year. João is the co-founder and chief executive of Veniam, the newest member of True Ventures’ family. True is leading a $4.9 million Series A round of funding with participation from Union Square Ventures, Cane Ventures, and a few private investors. I represent True on the board of directors.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

D-ORBIT SECURES A NEW ROUND OF INVESTMENT FROM COMO VENTURE & QUADRIVIO CAPITAL SGR
1. D-ORBIT SECURES A NEW ROUND OF INVESTMENT FROM
COMO VENTURE & QUADRIVIO CAPITAL SGR
December, 11th 2014, Lisbon: Building Global Innovators Accelerator (BGI) is proud to announce that
D-Orbit, a Finalist from the 3rd edition has successfully secured a new round of investment from two
Italian venture capital investors Como Ventures and Quadrivio Capital SGR.
D-Orbit develops smart propulsive devices to be installed on satellites before launch and able to properly
remove them at end-of-life in a quick, safe and controlled way, delivering benefits to satellite operators and
to our society. Created in 2011 it took about three years to became an international startup with a solid
presence in Europe and in the USA, to qualify its innovative device, to secure important commercial
partnerships and to obtain support and recognition from space agencies all over the world, including, among
others, ASI, ESA and NASA.
The startup has now successfully obtained a new round of investment from two Italian venture capital
investors: Como Venture and Quadrivio Capital SGR. Although the sum was not released it will allow them
to accomplish the development agenda.
But the fundraising process does not end with this round, it will continue in 2015 with the aim of attracting
new Italian and foreign investors.
Quadrivio Capital SGR, one of the main VC groups operating in Italy, through the venture capital fund TT
Ventures has been supporting D-Orbit since the beginning. The company has raised, up to date, about
€2.5M. This new round proofs the value the company has created so far and the fund’s willingness in helping
them to reach for other investors to secure the successive series of investment. Como Venture scouting for
disruptive, high-tech projects with high growth potential joins the round and the team, co-investing.
Luca Rossettini, first founder and CEO of the company, has publicly thanked Quadrivio for the support it has
given to the company growth in these years, Como Venture which will allow D-Orbit to quickly develop its
commercial and technological progresses and so to become a leader of decommissioning systems for
space, BGI as one of the first accelerator to have believed in the company and to have made possible the
creation of Portuguese subsidiary specialized on critical software and Caixa Capital that supported D-Orbit
operation in Portugal. “We provide satellites with an intelligent propulsive motor’— Rossettini says —“but
we, as the real motor of this project, need as much fuel and Quadrivio, Como Venture and Caixa Capital are
what we really needed. In D-Orbit we like velocity and the fuel we are going to find in 2015 to speed up our
motor, will really take us in orbit.”
For further information please contact D-Orbit via info@deorbitaldevices.com or BGI via mitportugal-iei@iscte.pt
