We are Solar E-Cycles from Strathmore Business School Energy Research Centre in Nairobi. We design and build solar powered light electric vehicles for the largest market the planet has ever seen. Africa will grow to 4 billion people within my lifetime. Our vehicles can also provide electricity.
You may know that Africa has 622 million people without electricity today, women and girls spend 40 bn hours a year hauling water (and don’t go to school) and half earn less than $2 a day. There is a shortfall of 10 million vehicles a year in african production. The fun part is that our solution solves all these problems by giving people economic opportunities. Our vehicles pay for themselves by creating jobs for our clients.
Targeting off-grid communities it can fetch water and let the girls get to school, evacuate a patient, light the home, power the small business while protecting the environment.
Economic development and the planet can’t wait.
We make a vehicle that is a power generator on wheels with a range of 50km a day at up to 35kph made from off the shelf parts. It produces 3kWh of electricity every day. It’s enough to light the home and more. All this for $1000 - No one can beat that.
But the real value of our product is that it’s a life changer. It creates jobs. It can pay for itself for a low daily rate with PAYGO.
For example our typical client is a lady that that sells fish in the evening to make ends meet. She carries a propane tank, pots, oil and fresh fish on a bus every evening to a large apartment complex. Now with the solar e-cycle she can travel to work and back, keep her fish fresh in an electric cooler, light her sales stand, play a radio to attract customers. She only has to sell one extra fish, or not lose one to spoil, to cover the cost of the vehicle with no cost of energy. She can also charge cell phone. In Kenya the cost of charging a cell phone is 20shillings. Only 10 customers is needed each day for her to pay for the vehicle.
Solar-E-Cycles is more than an affordable, durable and sustainable electric vehicle, it is a life-changer that empowers people towards economic freedom.
To poor families in off-grid villages its just get in and go. No refuelling. Solar-E-Cycles pays for itself. It is economic freedom.
To Micro-credit lenders, it empowers our clients and provides us with the added security of GPS tracking.
To Impact Investors, it is the environmentally friendly sustainable impact investment that provides the KPI to justify the investment.
We assemble low cost components in Asia and can ship a solar powered light electric vehicle-in-–a-box to your door in a kit just like IKEA.
We have built over 10 prototypes to date. We have started a production run of 100 vehicles in Nairobi. The first batch of 10 has come off the production line.
Our vision is to go for an OPEN SOURCE approach that will mobilize local welding shops to assemble our vehicles throughout Africa. Suppliers of components will come together with customers via our website to build custom made bikes.
In Africa we will ship in up to 200 in a 40 foot container and open a business unit every 100km that is connected via IoT.
Every aspect of our vehicle’s performance will be collected and uploaded to our data base. We have completed our second data logger prototype.
By collecting all operational data. We can start rating components even driver behaviour. Our on-board GPS GSM gives us feedback on each vehicle to run the distribution business remotely and to improve our product and better meet our customer needs.
A a key part of our business model using GSM mobile money and GPS our pay-as-you-go approach will expand our sales just like solar home systems have. We are talking of 8 million customers in 5 years with the help of service providers like Anganza.
Our basic plan is 2 euros a day lease. The user owns the vehicle in 3 years. And payback is 18 mos for us.
We expect to stretch the lease over 10 years eventually when we get more experience with maintenance.
We see Bombardier as a role model.
Joseph Armand Bombardier had a vision to ride on snow and became the third largest airplane company and a major train operator here in Europe.
We can do the same in solar powered vehicles. We are the next transportation revolution
To implement our business model we will need different applications:
Power and battery management systems
Data Collection and transmission over GSM
Pay-as-you-go
And eventually Self driving technology and safety applications such as vehicle detection from the rear.
You know the auto parts industry. We know Africa. Let’s get together and change the world.
We can be your social enterprise project so you can show your shareholders you are doing impact investing. And now you know that we can be as big as AirBnB or Uber. And if you invest in our company we will match you dollar of dollar. We have 80,000 euros of components we can invest in the project as in-kind contribution. Within 6 months together we will have 100 vehicles out there in a pay-as-you-go business.
If we can spread our costs over 10 years as we expect, we can get the price down to 50 cents a day for the customer and still make a profit
