2. GHANTOOT - TRAGEDY
At least three people were killed
and nearly 350 injured in a
horrific 60 vehicle pile-up on the
Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near
Ghantoot
INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT- The crash happened
because everyone was speeding despite foggy conditions.
Drivers weren't leaving a safe distance between cars and
were not attentive. This resulted in everyone hitting each
other after the first crash."
6. Driving in fog
Most of the information needed for safe driving is
gathered visually – FOG severely limits the
visual information available.
This is why it is the
most dangerous weather condition to drive in.
7. Driving in fog
Fog not only takes away visual information,
it also distorts what can be seen, making it
difficult to assess speed and distance.
The best advice is DON’T drive in fog or Pull
off ur vehicle at a reasonable distance from
the hard shoulders till the fog is cleared off
If you can't avoid it, the guidelines on these
slides WILL help make you safer.
8. General fog driving advice
Avoid using full beam in fog as the light will
reflect back off the fog and reduce what you
can see.
Apart from dazzling the drivers in front, your
full lights can throw a shadow in front of their
vehicles making it harder for them to see.
9. General fog driving advice
At junctions, lower your window, listen for
other traffic - turning off the CD/radio will help!
Sound your horn to warn other drivers that
you are there.
Check your speed often - you may be
increasing your speed without realizing it.
10. General fog driving advice
When you stop in traffic or at junctions, keep
your foot on the brake pedal until you know
that the driver behind has seen you.
Use your windscreen wipers and washers
often and keep your de-misters switched on.
11. General fog driving advice
Remember S.A.S. when driving in fog -
you'll be
Safe and Sound
when you adjust your
Space and Speed!
12. Keeping a safe distance in fog
Because you can't see very far ahead you will
have little or no warning if the vehicle ahead of
you stops suddenly – REDUCE YOUR SPEED
Stay well back and allow yourself plenty of room to
stop SAFELY if necessary.
“It's all too easy to stop………. dead in
fog”
13. Keeping a safe distance in fog
Another problem on high speed roads is that
fog can drift, one moment you have
reasonable visibility, the next moment, you
can’t see anything ...
It doesn't take a lot of imagination to think
what might happen if the traffic ahead has
stopped and you can't see it!
14. HAZARD Warning lights
DO NOT USE YOUR HAZARD WARNING
LIGHTS WHILE DRIVING.
These lights are WARNING lights to indicate you
are STOPPED and a stationary hazard.
Using them whilst driving means you cannot
indicate to other vehicles any direction you wish to
turn.
15. Front and Rear fog lights
The Wrong use of LIGHTS during foggy conditions
can also be a DANGER.
Use ALL your lights correctly and safely.
Ensure they are WORKING and CLEAN at all times.
DON’T DAZZLE
16. Front and Rear fog lights
The most benefit from front fog lamps can
be gained at night, especially on roads with
street lighting. If you switch off your
headlamps but leave on your front fog lamps
other drivers will still be able to see you, but
you will see more clearly because less light
will be reflected back by the water vapor in
the Fog.
17. Front and Rear fog lights
High intensity rear fog lamps are designed
for thick fog, typically 80 meters or less
visibility.
Using rear fog lights when visibility is greater
can mask your brake lights and dazzle other
drivers.
18. General Info:-
When driving on a road that is new to you:
– You eyes tend to scan the road from left to right which is an excellent
driving habit.
– We tend not to scan when in familiar territory.
How closely can you safely follow another car?
– We tend to follow based on how much of the road we can see
A long hood causes us to follow at a greater distance (since you
have to look over the hood to see the street).
Drivers with shorter hoods tend to follow more closely
– Use the 2 or 4 second rule
Good driving conditions, keep a 2 second distance behind
Poor driving conditions, keep a 4 second distance behind
19. Some Tips -“Road rage”
Road rage is driving under the influence of too much
anger.
Provoked by:
– Feeling endangered by someone else’s driving (another
driver cuts you off or tailgates you).
– Resentment at being forced to slow down
– Righteous indignation at someone who breaks traffic
rules
– Anger at someone taking out their road rage on you
Therapy for road rage:
– Take a deep breath and just let it go!
