Erich Dieckmann studied architecture in Danzig before moving to Dresden to study painting and drawing. In 1921 he enrolled in the Bauhaus in Weimar where he worked as a carpenter until 1925. When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, Dieckmann transferred to the State College of Architecture in Weimar where he headed the carpentry workshop until 1930. He then led the carpentry workshop at Kunstgewerbeschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle until 1933. Dieckmann was one of the most important furniture designers at the Bauhaus, developing frame types for chair furniture.
