(Dr.) Neil B. Bishop Curriculum vitae
Full Professor (retired Aug 31, 2015), Department of French and Spanish,
nbishop@mun.ca Telephone (709) 351-2753
Citizenship: Canadian and French (dual).
Main areas of academic specialization: teaching French as a Second Language; Québécois
Literature and Culture; Literary Translation
There are definitely omissions in the “Scholarly References to my Publications” section,
below, largely due to the abundant scholarship devoted by myself and many others to the
works of Anne Hébert, an author whose work has interested many others scholars, whence
scores of citations and references to my Hébert work in published books and articles as
well as in PhD and M.A. theses. My Hébert work has also led to numerous quotations and
references in scholarly studies and histories of French-Canadian literature, Canadian
literature and French literature. This process of citing and referencing my Hébert work is
on-going. Including all references and citations (especially those in unpublished works
such as theses) is scarcely possible. It is gratifying to observe that my work has been—and
continues to be-- relevant to numerous other scholars and students at the professorial,
graduate and undergraduate levels : some of the references are in publications and theses
dating from as recently as September 2013.
Omissions are also probable as regards scholarly references to my work on Robert
Lalonde’s and Michèle Mailhot’s writings.
Significant entries dating since my last sabbatical in the Awards and Publications sections
below are bolded.

II. BOOK CHAPTERS, ENCYCLOPEDIA ENTRIES, SCHOLARLYARTICLES
AND RELATED SCHOLARLY CONTRIBUTIONS (All in refereed scholarly journals,
books, encyclopedias and dictionaries unless otherwise specified)
Note: the dictionary and encyclopedia contributions devoted to Anne Hébert are in no way
redundant, for each publisher required a different perspective on her work: feminist, in the
case of The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature, novel-focused in the case of the
Encyclopedia of the Novel; and, in the case of Le Robert des grands écrivains de langue
française and Le Robert des lettres, the contribution had to encompass as much of Hébert's
work, and as many aspects of it, as possible; and demonstrate the importance of her work
in the world of French-language literatures.
A. Forthcoming Articles and Dictionary Entries
Invited encyclopedia entry: the general editors of the new Dictionnaire Robert de
littérature de langue française (project director: Philippe Hamon) have invited me to
contribute the article on Anne Hébert. Date of publication unknown; entry has been
submitted.

Franco-Newfoundland Dimension of Some of my Research
My research and publications record also includes a Franco-Newfoundland dimension. I
have translated from French to English two collections of poetry, Femme au profil d’arbre
and En longues rivières cachées by Franco-Newfoundland author Annick Perrot-Bishop.
The first was published under the title Woman Arborescent in 2005; the second, entitled In
Long, Secret Rivers is slated for publication in 2010. All my book translations strengthen
the national scope of my work, as they were accepted on Canada’s west coast by Talon
Books of Vancouver, B.C. and Ekstasis Editions Victoria, B.C. and were published after
assessment by prestigious funding agencies (Canada Council for the Arts, British
Columbia Arts Council).
Several of my non-book-length translations also have given a wider voice to Franco-
Newfoundland writers (Michel Savard and Annick Perrot-Bishop); they have generally
been published in journals assessed by the Canada Council for the Arts and/or provincial
councils for the arts.
I feel this dimension of my work to be particularly important, because the Franco-
Newfoundland dimension of Newfoundland and Labrador society is important, as is
19
amply demonstrated by a number of masterly books by Dr. Ronald Romkey, University
Research Professor. At the same time, Perrot-Bishop represents important (often over-
looked) aspects of Franco-Newfoundland society: its immigrant, international,
multicultural and post-modern parameters.

WORK IN PROGRESS
Préparation of two chapters for a collectively-authored book on the works of Michèle
Mailhot; international editorial board: Marie-Claire Blais (!), writer, Maïr Verthuy
(Professor Emeritus, Concordia University, and Sylvie Catherine Camet, Chargée de
conferences, Université d’Angers (France)
I continue the project of translating into English at least two (and hopefully more) of
Anne Hébert’s hitherto untranslated works. One (please see above, p. 17), “Two
Little Girls at the Window”, having already been published, I am working on
translating her short story “Shannon” which I believe may particularly interest
20
Newfoundlanders of the Avalon Peninsula, as the main characters in the story are of
Irish extraction.
My many years of study of the works of Anne Hébert, Yves Thériault and Robert
Lalonde, together with study of Maurizio Gatti’s Littérature amérindienne du Québec
[.] Écrits de langue française (Montréal, Bibliothèque québécoise, nouvelle edition
revue et augmentée [2009]) has led me to a research and publication project
consisting of an eco-critical study of some of the works of the first three, and some
works by Innu (and possibly Cree) authors written in French. The eco-critical study
will attempt to elucidate, in the literary corpus chosen, attitudes towards nature and
in particular the wilderness as outlined in Jack Warwick’s The Long Journey; and
possibly calls for action expressed in the corpus regarding the state of the
environment. Literary works both reflect and shape public attitudes towards public
issues such as the state of the environment and in particular humans’ effects on that
state.

to do. For political and commercial reasons, the St. John’s market for simultaneous
interpretation has atrophied over the past few years, the province having been integrated
by the federal government into an Atlantic unit. Interpretation contracts now go

Post-retirement CV, 16 09 2015

  • 1. 1 (Dr.) Neil B. Bishop Curriculum vitae Full Professor (retired Aug 31, 2015), Department of French and Spanish, nbishop@mun.ca Telephone (709) 351-2753 Citizenship: Canadian and French (dual). Main areas of academic specialization: teaching French as a Second Language; Québécois Literature and Culture; Literary Translation There are definitely omissions in the “Scholarly References to my Publications” section, below, largely due to the abundant scholarship devoted by myself and many others to the works of Anne Hébert, an author whose work has interested many others scholars, whence scores of citations and references to my Hébert work in published books and articles as well as in PhD and M.A. theses. My Hébert work has also led to numerous quotations and references in scholarly studies and histories of French-Canadian literature, Canadian literature and French literature. This process of citing and referencing my Hébert work is on-going. Including all references and citations (especially those in unpublished works such as theses) is scarcely possible. It is gratifying to observe that my work has been—and continues to be-- relevant to numerous other scholars and students at the professorial, graduate and undergraduate levels : some of the references are in publications and theses dating from as recently as September 2013. Omissions are also probable as regards scholarly references to my work on Robert Lalonde’s and Michèle Mailhot’s writings. Significant entries dating since my last sabbatical in the Awards and Publications sections below are bolded. SPECIAL HONOURS AND AWARDS 2013 : recognition by Dr. Jean Snook, Professor, Department of German and Russian, for my very modest contribution to her scholarly translation of Paul Nizon’s “My Year of Love”. 2011: Invited to join the “Comité scientifique international” of the international conference “Traduction et Francophonie” (16-17 May; venue: Université Stefan cel Mare, Suceava, Romania). Position accepted. 2009: Invited to join the “Comité de Rédaction” of the scholarly journal Acta Iassenyia Comparationis. Position accepted and continuing. 2008: First Prize in The John Dryden Translation Competition, organized by the British Comparative Literature Association and the British Centre for Comparative Literature.
  • 2. 2 This competition is the most prestigious and competitive literary translation competition extant, drawing the highest-level literary translators from the world over. 2005: Invited to join the Comité Honorifique of the scholarly journal Ateliers de traduction. Position accepted and continuing. 2002: Invited to join the “Comité Scientifique” of the scholarly comparative literature journal Acta Iassenyia Compartionis. Position accepted and continuing. 2001: Commendation (i.e., fourth place) in world-wide Literary Translation Competition organized by the British Comparative Literature Association and the British Centre for Comparative Literature. 1998: Invited to join the Editorial Board of the scholarly journal Canadian Literature mainly to provide assessments of manuscripts in the area of French-Canadian literature. Duration: 1998-2001. 1998: Nominated by the Atlantic Provinces Representative of the Association for Canadian Studies for that Association's Award of Merit, 1998. 1997: Nominated by the Atlantic Provinces Representative of the Association for Canadian Studies for that Association's Award of Merit, 1997. 1995: Appointed to a one-term position as Visiting Professor, Université Michel de Montaigne-Bordeaux 3 (France), Feb.-May 1996. 1995: Offered one-year appointment as Visiting Professor, University of Inner Mongolia (Hoh-Hot, People's Republic of China), Aug. 1995-July 1996 (declined, as I had already accepted the Bordeaux position. 1995: Appointed Adjunct Professor of French, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. 1995: "Prix de l'APFUCC 1995, catégorie livre", prize awarded to Best Scholarly Book by the Association des professeurs de francais des universités et collèges canadiens / Canadian Association of University and College Teachers of French, for my book Anne Hébert, son oeuvre, leurs exils. I am the only person to have won both APFUCC/CAUCTF’s Best Scholarly Book Prize and Best Scholarly Article Prize. 1992: Finalist, Governor General's Award (translation, French to English) for Death of the Spider, Vancouver, Talon Books (1991). 1990: My article "Le Personnage français dans quelques romans québécois contemporains", published in 1987 by Voix et Images (the leading journal in the field of

BOOK CHAPTERS, ENCYCLOPEDIA ENTRIES, SCHOLARLYARTICLES AND RELATED SCHOLARLY CONTRIBUTIONS (All in refereed scholarly journals, books, encyclopedias and dictionaries unless otherwise specified) Note: the dictionary and encyclopedia contributions devoted to Anne Hébert are in no way redundant, for each publisher required a different perspective on her work: feminist, in the case of The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature, novel-focused in the case of the Encyclopedia of the Novel; and, in the case of Le Robert des grands écrivains de langue française and Le Robert des lettres, the contribution had to encompass as much of Hébert's work, and as many aspects of it, as possible; and demonstrate the importance of her work in the world of French-language literatures. Franco-Newfoundland Dimension of Some of my Research My research and publications record also includes a Franco-Newfoundland dimension. I have translated from French to English two collections of poetry, Femme au profil d’arbre and En longues rivières cachées by Franco-Newfoundland author Annick Perrot-Bishop. The first was published under the title Woman Arborescent in 2005; the second, entitled In Long, Secret Rivers is slated for publication in 2010. All my book translations strengthen the national scope of my work, as they were accepted on Canada’s west coast by Talon Books of Vancouver, B.C. and Ekstasis Editions Victoria, B.C. and were published after assessment by prestigious funding agencies (Canada Council for the Arts, British Columbia Arts Council). Several of my non-book-length translations also have given a wider voice to Franco- Newfoundland writers (Michel Savard and Annick Perrot-Bishop); they have generally been published in journals assessed by the Canada Council for the Arts and/or provincial councils for the arts. I feel this dimension of my work to be particularly important, because the Franco- Newfoundland dimension of Newfoundland and Labrador society is important, as is

  • 20. 20 Newfoundlanders of the Avalon Peninsula, as the main characters in the story are of Irish extraction. My many years of study of the works of Anne Hébert, Yves Thériault and Robert Lalonde, together with study of Maurizio Gatti’s Littérature amérindienne du Québec [.] Écrits de langue française (Montréal, Bibliothèque québécoise, nouvelle edition revue et augmentée [2009]) has led me to a research and publication project consisting of an eco-critical study of some of the works of the first three, and some works by Innu (and possibly Cree) authors written in French. The eco-critical study will attempt to elucidate, in the literary corpus chosen, attitudes towards nature and in particular the wilderness as outlined in Jack Warwick’s The Long Journey; and possibly calls for action expressed in the corpus regarding the state of the environment. Literary works both reflect and shape public attitudes towards public issues such as the state of the environment and in particular humans’ effects on that state.
