Disputes about TV volume occur between younger and older listeners in homes. A directional loudspeaker array can boost sound for hearing impaired listeners by focusing sound in their direction. The array uses 32 sources arranged in vertical columns, with each column controlled independently, to direct sound while minimizing reflections. Measurements show the array provides high acoustic contrast between young and old listeners, similar to what an older person needs to understand speech. Subjective tests are being conducted to evaluate performance for speech recognition.
