Positive Peer Communication
Created By:Patrice Marshall
Revised By:Jacob Conkin
1 Goals of Activity
o The goal of this activity is to increase social skills in students who would typically be shy of
complimenting a fellow peerin person.
o Practise using mannerisms and showing that other students care about others.
o Create a positive environment in which students see that others respect them.
2 Materials Needed
o Index Cards
o Pencils, pens,or markers
3 Advance Preparation
The leader of this activity should have index cards no less then the number of students in the
classroom. For example,a classroom of 21 students should have no less then 21 index cards. Beginby
writing the names of each student in marker on the back of the index card.
4 Descriptionof Activity
As a group, or a class, students will select an index card at random from a hat or bag with their eyes
closed so theycan not see the names when picking. Once students have the cards they are
instructed not to discuss whose name they have. Studentswill then be instructed to write one or
more compliments about that person that makes them a good person. For example,a student might
say “I like how you hold the door for our class” or “You are kind”. Studentsare not allowed to write
about how a student looks, such as “I like your… hair, shoes, shirt, etc.” Students will also not write
their names on the card.
Once each student is done, they will place the card back into the hat or bag. When all the students
are done the leader will pull a card out and call that person’s name up to collect the cards so that
they can see what is written about them.
Optional: The leader may ask the class by a raise of hands if they want to share what theywrote
about another student and talk about why they wrote it.
5 Debrief of Activity
Once the students have their cards the leader will explain why they chose this activity and talk about
how writing nice things about others can also make them feel nice.Theyshould talk about why it is
important to be nice the fellow peers rather then bully or be rude.
