The Portuguese were skilled sailors because they had a long history as seafarers and a long coastline. They sought an ocean route to Asia to access lucrative trade routes more quickly and profitably than traveling overland on the Silk Road. Portugal was the first European country to establish a sea route to Asia for trade.
