largest city, is its capital.
Palácio de S. Bento, House of theParliament
The four main governing
components are the President of
the Republic, the Parliament, the
Government, headed by a Prime
Minister, and the courts.
Portugal has around 11 million
inhabitants, of which 52% are female.
About 400,000 of these inhabitants are
legal immigrants who come from
Brasil, from African countries and from
several European countries.
We also have many immigrants from
Asian countries, like China.
Population

fisheries sector and is one of the
countries with the highest fish
consumption per capita.

About 85% of the Portuguese population is Roman Catholic and many
Portuguese holidays, festivals and traditions have a Christian origin.
The country also has small
Protestant, Mormon, Muslim,
Hindu, Sikh, Christian Orthodox,
Buddhist and Jewish

Portuguese cuisine is very
diverse, with different regions
having their own traditional
dishes. We consume a lot of
codfish (bacalhau in Portuguese),
for which there are hundreds of
recipes. Two other popular fish
recipes are grilled sardines and
caldeirada.
Gastronomy
Our typical meat recipes, that may be
made out of beef, pork, lamb, or
chicken, include cozido à portuguesa,
feijoada, frango de churrasco and
rojões.
Francesinha, and bifanas (grilled
pork) or prego (grilled beef) can
be considered as our fast food
dishes.
The Portuguese art of pastry has
its origins in Middle-Ages Catholic
monasteries. Pastéis de Belém
and Ovos Moles are good
examples of our very sweet
