an existing building. This hub must be a multifunctional facility providing an Education Centre, Farm extention offices, technical
laboratory, Commercial support centre and an Agricultural Bank. let the design be inspired by nature and be sustainable. the buildings

drinkable water for the facility, farming and using the resources to feed the students being taught in the facility
and market spaces to generate jobs and income for the facility and employees.

10. The Motherwll Amelioration
Theatre
CREATING POSITIVITY IN
A COMMUNITY THROUGH
ARCHITECTURE
This project is to provide two theatre
spaces – 1.) a 500 seat theatre having a
proscenium stage, and 2.) an intimate 60
- 120 seat “cabaret” VENUE (not having a
proscenium stage) and 3.) A “modest” out-
door performance arena/theatre/amphi-
theatre – seating 50 – 150 people. So one
of the critical issues is to understand the
nature of the stage (and staging). Multi
purpose stage configurations are always a
compromise – often being good for nothing
– however some degree of flexibility might
need to be investigated.

19. THE ICETHE ICE
IMPRINTIMPRINT
The Ice Rink Project
Required to design a com-
pletely new, from scratch, in-
door ICE SKATING and gaming
center. The client/developer,
supported by the department
of SPORTS AND RECREATION,
is ICE NIKE who are investing
in such centers all around the
country (just doing their little
bit towards sport, peace and
global happiness).
While the activity and sport
appeals especially to those
15 – 30 years old it is by no
means reserved to this group.
Many from older age brackets
and, of course, always from
both sexes, will participate.
Another very important aspect
to these facilities is that they
are popular for organized group
visits, in the corporate world
for team building programs as
well as for general recreation-
al staff outings, in a similar
vein, youth groups will organ-
ize outings and functions at
such venues as will there be
functions for even younger age
groups, eg. 8 – 14 year olds
for birthday parties etc.
Then there will also be the
more serious activity of organ-
ized and official sport de-
velopment no doubt going to
Provincial level. This for Ice
Hockey as well as the various
Ice related arts such as Figure
Skating, Dance and Theatre.
Often all great fun. Some-
times very serious and dedi-
cated.

STATUS:
Ice Rink
Modern rinks have a specific procedure for
preparing the surface. With the pipes cold, a
thin layer of water is sprayed on the sand
or concrete to seal and level it (or in the case
of concrete, to keep it from being marked).
This thin layer is painted white or pale blue
for better contrast; markings necessary for
hockey or curling are also placed, along with
logos or other decorations. Another thin
layer of water is sprayed on top of this.
All of the drilling, cutting, and welding
is done at the manufacturing site. The components
are then sent to the construction site to be
assembled. Besides the quick construction times,
these buildings are usually cheaper than normal
construction.The advantage of Steel Structure

Project objectives
- The design of a large project with a complex
schedule of accommodation;
- The design of a project with a significant place
for living component;
- The investigation of the effect of complex and
changing lifestyle patterns on design solutions;
- The investigation of a mix of activities within a
single building:
- The investigation of an appropriate architectural
form in relation to program and context;
- Choice of an appropriate structural system,
appropriate materials, circulation strategies and
service systems for a multi-storied building
retirement facilities that provide for various types
of accommodation and include community facilities,
frail care, appropriate shopping and medical care.
Although accommodation in such facilities is expen-
sive, there is no shortage of people with the means
to afford it.
Designing buildings for the elderly requires special
insights from the architect. This group of people,
that consists of all those over sixty, (and is
growing significantly as a percentage of the overall
population) have generally reached the end of their
working lives and are entering the final phase of
their lives, which may end in the relatively close
future or may continue for another thirty years.
Certain things are certain. The elderly will get
slower and less active, they will be less adventur-
ous and as they get older be less keen to go out.
They will require less space although many are
not keen to get rid of their possessions. They will
get smaller and more bent, less able to use stairs
and do other things the young take for granted.
The elderly also feel the cold more and like to sit
in the sun.
Many will start to suffer from “old” illnesses such
as atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease,
cancer, arthritis, cataracts, osteoporosis, type 2
diabetes, hypertension and Alzheimer's disease.
They will also, especially as they get older, need to
be provided with suitable activities and entertain-
ment to keep them interested and active.
Most certain of all is the fact that they will die,
and most, especially as they get older, wish to die
at home, and not have to make a final journey to a
hospice or similar.
There is growing popularity for retirement com-
plexes that allow people to enter the complex when
they reach retirement, and not leave it until their
final departure from all things on this earth.
The following extract from the “Agingcare” website
sets out much of what this concept of senior
housing consists of.
“Continuing Care Retirement Communities explained”

27. Vertical circulation
around the space is
required,with an
efficient provision of resolving
juxtaposed spaces.
In this response is an
attempt to design an
externally rigid courtyard.
vertical movement is explored
as an idea to intergrate a
horizontal floating means of
circulation.
designing planes can
create a rigid system
of circulation and a
simplistic play with
the elevations produced
The orientation of each
plane will control a
movement system that is
relevant to the
organization of space.
Another approach to the site
would be that of
orientating the building
in response to the site
physically and
organically.Innovation in
green spaces which will
create an area of
tranquility and

Organic circulation can easily
organize the response to
