Japanese food.
Japanese cuisine offers a unique and flavorful
blend of both gourmet and everyday foods
and dishes. Following are just a few of the more
popular dishes found in Japanese cuisine.
 - Takoyaki: Served both as a festival snack and
homemade meal, takoyaki are octopus dumplings that
originated from Osaka. This dish includes a piece of
octopus at the center of a fried, light ball of dough, and it
is typically topped with fish shavings and mayonnaise
along with sweet okonomiyaki sauce.
- Onigiri: Also known as rice balls, onigiri are basically
cooked rice wrapped in some seaweed. The rice is
normally flavored slightly with salt, and many onigiri
feature some sort of filling, such as salmon or umeboshi
(which is pickled Japanese plum). This dish is an
inexpensive snack that is often found in convenience
stores, but it can also be ordered in basic restaurants.
 Kare raisu: Essentially a curry rice dish, kare
raisu is cooked rice and Japanese curry.
Although curry is not often thought of as a
Japanese dish, the country has developed
its own type of curry that is mild with a lot of
sauce. Typically found in working-class
restaurants and as a common home-
cooked dish, kare raisu often contains
meats, carrots, and potatoes, making it
similar to a stew. It is usually topped with a
combination of pickled vegetables.
